Pupils from Oakfield Academy have been shortlisted from thousands of entries in the Climate Week Challenge, the country’s biggest environmental competition. The pupils competed against over 130,000 people from schools and workplaces across the country in the Climate Week Challenge on Monday 12th March. The challenge, Green Your Space, was kept secret until 9.00am on the first day of Climate Week (12th-18th March) and teams of four to six people had one day to come up with a response. At Oakfield Academy, ‘Transformation Oakfield’ was judged by staff to be the winning entry to represent the school in the 9-12 age category. Pupils envisaged a complete restoration of a derelict site in their local area, incorporating sustainable technology and green activities. The detailed plan involved a caravan site for tourists visiting the nearby Norman castle. This would be powered by wind energy, with hot water-showers generated by energy from solar panels, and an upgrade of local transport to reduce the use of cars by tourists and the local community. There would also be a Fairtrade café powered by green energy. Another area of the site would be dedicated to the environment, with a pond to attract wildlife, information on caring for the environment, a butterfly walk and a green fitness trail. Rachel Harding, head of ICT from Oakfield Academy said, “We’re delighted to have been shortlisted in the Climate Week Challenge. The pupils had a fun day using technology and discussion to create a great response to the challenge; we are all really proud.”Winners will be selected by a judging panel including Liz Bonnin, presenter of BBC One’s ‘Bang Goes the Theory’, Kate Humble, presenter of BBC Two’s ‘Springwatch’, Sophia Myles, star of BBC One’s ‘Spooks’, Bruce Parry, adventurer and presenter of BBC ‘Two’s Tribe’, Cath Senior, head of understanding climate change at the Met Office, Helen Skelton, presenter of CBBC’s ‘Blue Peter’ and Michaela Strachan, presenter of BBC Two’s ‘Autumn watch’.
