OAKFIELD Academy has a new Head of English, Liz Hall and she already has lots of plans for the department.
Liz said, “I am thrilled to have been appointed Head of English in a school that I love and am passionate about.
“I am an English teacher because I believe that through reading and writing a person makes sense of who they are and what their potential can be. I feel that it is a profound honour to share this learning journey with young people and be, in some way, influential in them self- actualising their dreams and ambitions. With this belief and passion I aim to be, not only an efficient and effective leader of English, but also a visionary and inspirational one.
“I have the great pleasure to be building on the excellent work that our Literacy team already offer our learners. We have a fantastic team of teachers who have implemented the new curriculum and assessment grades with their usual enthusiasm and skill. We identify the needs of our learners early on and offer an effective programme of support and intervention. Our results are good. So where do I fit in?
“I have been a teacher of English since 1998 and with twelve of those years in secondary schools I believe I have the vision to map out a cohesive four year skills curriculum to give our students the best possible foundation for their study at GCSE whilst showcasing these skills in their SATs on the way through.
“Our staff work tirelessly to be the best practitioners they can be and I will be co-ordinating a system where we share our personal areas of expertise with each other, and with our support staff, so that every student benefits from our vast pool of teaching knowledge and strategies across all classes and all years. As extended writing and technical accuracy is a key skill being assessed in most GCSE subjects there is no better place to start than with our writing.
“Finally, I believe learning should be rewarding and fun and with that philosophy I will be offering ‘Head of English Awards’ where work to be proud of is acknowledged and shared. I will also be developing some of our much loved events throughout the four years such as World Book Day and public speaking as well as introduce some new ones. Watch this space!”
