TWO Oakfield School students were given a crash course in bike maintenance thanks to the scheme, Build-a-Bike, in collaboration with Julian House.
Jay McDonald and Ryan-John Hodges took part in the course at the Bike Shed in Frome and came away with a bike each which they can keep, as well as the skills on how to fix it.
The Build-a-Bike course runs for six weeks and teaches the basic skills to maintain a bike through the process of a guided rebuild with participants having the opportunity to work with a workshop mechanic to fully dismantle a bike and rebuild it from its component parts.
Once the six-week course is completed, participants get to keep the bike that they have built along with a portfolio containing records of their work, an attendance certificate and three AQA qualifications: Introduction to Health & Safety in the Workplace, Repair and Service of Bicycles and Bicycle Maintenance.
