A GROUP of students from Oakfield Academy took part in their passing out parade earlier this month after completing a course at Frome Fire Station.
11 pupils aged 12 and 13 years-old took part in the five-day course which taught them basic firefighting skills, first aid skills and how to make an escape plan in the event of a fire in their home. They were also taught the dangers of starting a fire and the dangers firefighters face. The course was also attended by police officers who gave the students an insight into the police force.
At the end of the week the students enjoyed their passing-out parade which was attended by parents, teachers and representatives from the Fire Service.
Lead instructor, Ian Humphreys said, “First and foremost the children were a credit to their school. The transition from when I first met the children on Monday morning to their passing out on the Friday was remarkable, as coming from their world into ours is a huge step and they should be very proud of themselves.”
The Phoenix course is designed to encourage self-confidence, build self-esteem, leadership skills and to work as part of a team.
