FROME residents came together last month to tackle some of the weeds and plants emerging through the pavement on Portway.
Hoedown is a monthly event that seeks to clear weeds by hand in various different locations around town.
One of the organisers, Mendip District councillor Shane Collins, said, “Six of us cleared 90% of Portway in just under three hours on a sunny Sunday, removing dead plants, leaves and litter. Hopefully this will make for a more pleasant walk from the station to the town centre.
“Hoedown sprang out of Mendip District Council (MDC) climate and ecological emergency motion and means MDC or IDVerde have not sprayed roundup/glyphosate in our town for over two years now. So, respect and thanks to all the people who have done their bit over the last two years.
“We will be out again on Sunday 27th November if you want help in your street or area. It’s a sad fact but after years to government austerity, councils simply do not have the funds for hand weeding our streets. So, the choice is complaining and or doing it ourselves! And we know what will make us and the town feel better. Hoedown continues on the last Sunday of each month with lots of people hoeing their pavements throughout the month.”
