Orchardleigh Golf Club Seniors put themselves into the quarter-final of the Somerset Bowl after a convincing 4-1 victory against Minehead and West Somerset GC.
Played at a neutral venue, the immaculate Enmore Park course in Bridgwater provided a good challenge off the back tees, but the Orchardleigh team enjoyed the run on the fairways and true surfaces on the greens.
Having to give seven shots did not prove a barrier to the Captain, Malcolm Lloyd, and his playing partner, Rick Wright, who lead the team from the front with a 3&2 win. Gary Quin and Paul Lewis had to give nine shots, but still triumphed 2&1, while Joe Hearn and Peter Foote, giving 3 shots, were comfortable 5&3 victors.
Paul Sherrell and Steve Lawrence actually received one shot, and then proceeded to perform a “dog licence” – winning 7&6, while Jim Worsley and John Scott, up against two single figure players, managed to stay level for seventeen holes, but succumbed on the 18th.
Orchardleigh’s reward for this victory is a quarter-final tie against Burnham and Berrow, who have beaten the Frome club in the last two years, but Orchardleigh (who won the Seniors Somerset Bowl in 2015) will relish the challenge.
