Petition handed to county council calling for road safety to be improved

A CONCERNED Frome resident has handed over a petition to Somerset County Council calling for road safety to be improved.

Richard Bray, a retired road safety officer, has created the petition as he believes the liklihood of an accident in the area where he lives is increasing. He feels that priority road markings need to be installed on three junctions with ripple strips and a 20mph limit being introduced.

“I have lived at Ecos Court from when it first opened, some 23 years ago,” said Richard. “It is now an ideal location to live, with a good community spirit and a real coming together. We now have a large number of infants on the estate and most of those do not have a garden in which to play so the danger of an accident increases with so many playing near roads.

“The petition has been well received by those that I have told about it and it has the support of the local community. I have handed it over to Somerset County Councillor Derek Tanswell who has advised me that  he has written to Somerset Highways in support of the petition. I have also contacted the Highways Department, who has said they will get an engineer to look at the situation.

“I appreciate that all these things cost money, which authorities are loathe to spend, but I would be very upset if it cost the serious injury or death of a young child to get a response.”

The area Richard and cllr Tanswell are concerned about is made up of houses owned by Knightstone Housing Association. Their community empowerment officer Emily Osler said, “I’ve been working with residents at Ecos Court for the past year, listening to their concerns and ideas and supporting them to achieve what matters in their community.

“At Ecos Court residents were especially worried about the numbers of young children playing in and around roads and the speeds of vehicles through the estate. Many of the children have nowhere safe to play, so residents are working towards making Ecos Court a safer estate for children.

“We are partnering with Frome PCSO Shelley Day to deliver road safety training, Barnardo’s play rangers to work on children’s friendships and play behaviours, and a landscape architect in the hope of incorporating various small play zones or features around the estate. Residents also run a children’s gardening club to keep them busy.

“Richard Bray has used his knowledge as an ex-road safety officer and his determination to get a petition together to ask Somerset Highways to install speed reduction measures is part of this aim. Cllr Derek Tanswell has pledged his support and we are hoping to have a visit from a highways engineer to assess what can be done to slow vehicles down and make the estate safer for vulnerable road users.”

  • Bridge club stalwart retires after 15 years

A long-serving captain who helped bring Frome Bridge Club back from near extinction has stepped down from the committee after 15 years.

Captain Marianne Lewin has retired to allow younger members to take the helm and continue the modernisation and growth of the club.

To mark her retirement from the committee, Marianne has been made an honorary life member of the club.

Marianne was part of the duo who, with recently retired secretary John Perry, helped bring the club back from near extinction 15 years ago.

  • Batsford Timber celebrates 37 years in business

Family-run timber business Batsford Timber is marking 37 years in business, continuing to serve customers across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas.

Known for reliable service and quality products, the company offers a wide range of fencing and outdoor timber materials, along with onsite commercial timber treatment solutions, giving customers everything they need under one roof.

Founded in 1989 by Bob Clark, a fencing contractor working across the Midlands and Cotswolds, the company was born out of frustration at the difficulty of sourcing reliable, high-quality fencing and timber materials. Spotting a gap in the market, Bob launched Batsford Timber to provide the products and service he had struggled to find himself.

The new Frome Area Movement and Place Plan is being developed by Frome Town Council with Somerset Council and neighbouring parishes.

It will look at how people move around Frome and the surrounding area, how communities are connected and how access to jobs, education, healthcare, shops, services and leisure opportunities can be improved.

  • Frome teen wins pickleball silver after injury comeback

A teenager from Frome has won a silver medal at a national pickleball championship just months after returning to the sport following a serious arm injury.

Kai Santano, 15, competed in the Young Persons Championships at Courtside in Stourbridge in June, taking second place in the mixed-age doubles category alongside 11-year-old Seb Oprea.

The result comes only four months after Kai returned to play following surgery for a double break to his left arm and a partial wrist dislocation, sustained while skateboarding in Victoria Park just one week before he was due to compete in the National Championships.

His mum Laurie said, “He absolutely destroyed his arm and was in a full cast from October until December. He wasn’t allowed to do any contact sports until 1st February. He’s done really well to get back into it.”

  • Mark of excellence awarded to Frome green spaces

An international mark of excellence for parks and green spaces has been awarded to Frome’s Victoria Park and Mary Baily Playing Field.

The Green Flag Award was presented after judges visited in April, who explored the wide range of activities, facilities and community projects that take place across the parks and how they are managed by Frome Town Council.

Assessors praised the parks’ welcoming atmosphere, strong community involvement and features such as the toddler play area, community bowls club, murals, a carved bench created from a heritage tree felled in 2025 due to a fungal infection and the community cafe.
