ANOTHER Scrapstore event is coming to the Cheese and Grain on Tuesday 15th November from 2pm to 5pm.
Scrapstore is a resource for art, craft and play materials sourced from local donations. The hall at the Cheese and Grain will be full of everything you could wish for to get creative, including paper, card, fabric, sparkly materials, alpaca wool and so much more.
Entry to Scrapstore is £1 for over 12s, with free admission to children who are under 12, home educated or part of a school group.
Scraps is paid for according to the volume per bag. You are encouraged to bring along a bag for life or re-used bags, but they can also be purchased on the day. Some items will be individually priced.
The project is growing, and Pod have been working hard in the community to source more amazing scrap items. All materials are locally sourced and are preventing items going directly into landfill or waste processes. Every item re-used will slow down the waste process.
Becky Bird explains, “We are building contacts with local businesses who manufacture or sell items or who have waste from production, to build up our range of stock. We have had amazing support so far. But if any businesses would like us to collect their safe scrap materials, they can contact us to discuss the suitability of their waste.
“Schools and childcare settings use all sorts of materials for science, exploring, creative projects and play. Everything from plastic tubes and fabrics to old kitchen items are valuable materials to them. We also have families who come along for creative and play inspiration on a very low budget. This is never more important than at this time of reduced income and high living costs.”
Any school wishing to bring a party of pupils to the event can contact becky@thepodcharity.org.uk to arrange their visit.
The Pod says, “At the last event held in May, three schools brought small parties of children to choose materials for specific projects and to get inspiration. The children loved having the choice from so many different items. It is a great way to make learning fun and interactive. The ages ranged from 5 to 17 and all went away with bags of goodies to explore and huge smiles on their faces.”
“During the event the Toy Library will run a play space to show what is available to loan from the service. It is a great drop in resource which help to make the Scrapstore fun for all ages. Creative Cats n Kittens will also be providing a craft table to showcase what can be made from the materials in the room and children can participate free.
“But the real magic of Pod Scrapstore, which sets it apart from the rest, is in the Pod members who are supported to run this event. This amazing team of volunteers, who are adults with additional needs, requested an opportunity to get experience in the world of work. This is often difficult for them, due to service cuts and social stigma. So, Pod has co-designed this project with them to fill the void.
“The team will be supported to plan, set up, run the event, and clear up afterwards. It is a mammoth task, but they are a fab team. Come along and find out what the excitement is all about or look out for future event dates planned in January, March, May and July.”
