  • Somerset Council commits to turning Frome green space into homes By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby Somerset Council will push forward with plans to build new homes at Packsaddle Fields despite considerable public backlash. The green space, at the northern edge of Frome, is owned by the council and has been a popular walking spot for local residents and families for more than 50 years. LiveWest entered into an agreement with Somerset Council to redevelop the site but was twice refused permission to erect 74 homes and a children’s home on the space. While LiveWest plans its next move, the council fenced off the majority of the site in early-March, leaving only the existing public right of way accessible to local residents and visitors.   • Fundraising concert celebrates life of influential Frome resident The life of one of Frome’s most influential and well-loved characters, Phil Moakes, will be celebrated on Sunday 10th May with a fundraising concert at the Cheese and Grain. Phil, who died last year, was a sound engineer who worked on several productions at the ECOS Amphitheatre next to the Merlin Theatre in the 1990s. He was a town councillor, Somerset councillor and chair of the board of trustees for the Cheese and Grain. He also took on the Frome FM radio station, establishing a studio in the Old Fire Station in Christchurch Street West. The event, titled The Party at the End of the World, will feature some of the notable recording artists Phil worked with. One of the organisers is Phil’s long-term friend and colleague, Martin Dimery. He said, “Heading the line-up will be The Utopia Strong, featuring former World Snooker Champion Steve Davis and ‘psychedelic polymath’ Kavus Torabi, a hugely respected musician who has also appeared in the legendary prog rock band Gong.   • New Women’s Health Hub launches in Frome A new Women’s Health Hub is launching at Frome Medical Practice, bringing together a wide range of women’s health services under one roof for the benefit of the local community. The hub will officially launch during National Women’s Health Week, from 11th to 17th May. The hub will support easier and quicker access to the right care, offering services including menopause support, menstrual health, sexual health and cervical screening, contraception, pelvic pain management, family planning, and more.   • Plans progress for redesigned Market Yard toilets The Public toilets at Market Yard are set to move forward towards reopening after residents backed plans to redesign the site in a public engagement exercise. Frome Town Council has agreed to seek a 25-year lease from Somerset Council to enable future investment in the toilets, which has been closed since last year due to ageing infrastructure, high maintenance costs and vandalism. The decision, made at Full Council on 22nd April, follows engagement with more than 500 residents through the My Frome platform, events and face-to-face discussions. People were asked to choose between four options, including refurbishment, full rebuild, a reimagined space with another use alongside toilets, or permanent closure with expansion of the You’re Welcome scheme, which allows free access to toilets in local businesses. The most supported option was a “reimagined space”, combining public toilets with a possible attended information point or concession to help deter anti-social behaviour. Around three quarters of respondents favoured retaining centrally located public toilets over relying on the wider scheme. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.   • Frome choir to perform Handel classic Music lovers in Frome are invited to Oakfield Choir’s upcoming performance of Handel’s much‑loved oratorio, Judas Maccabaeus. The concert takes place on Saturday 9th May at 7pm at Holy Trinity Church. Organisers say, “This will be a fitting setting for one of Handel’s most triumphant and dramatic works. Best known for the famous chorus ‘See, the conqu’ring hero comes!’, Judas Maccabaeus combines rousing choruses with expressive solos and rich orchestral writing. “Oakfield Choir, a well‑established Frome‑based choir and registered charity, will be conducted by Neil Moore, bringing together local singers and professional musicians to deliver a powerful and uplifting performance.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.

  • Frome cider firm highlights rising energy costs on BBC Panorama A Frome cider producer was featured on BBC Panorama recently, exploring the impact of rising fuel and energy prices linked to the Iran war. Lilley’s Cider, a family-run business based at West Woodlands, appeared in an episode broadcast on 27th April which examined pressure on businesses linked to global energy market disruption. Owner Marc Lilley said diesel costs had risen significantly to around £3,000 a month. He said, “The costs have been driven up. We have still been able to get everything we need but everything is getting much more expensive. We cover the whole of England and Wales. We have five satellite depots around the country with drivers and vans plus lots of vans based in Frome. “On top of the price of diesel, we have got a steam boiler, which runs off heating oil.
