Extra police support will be deployed to the Frome area to tackle road safety, following concerns about speeding.
Two police response vehicles, a dedicated speed enforcement motorcyclist and a specialist van will be sent to Frome.
The news was shared by the Assistant Chief Constable Jon Cummins at the recent annual general meeting (AGM) for Mendip Community Speedwatch.
Jon said the additional enforcement will bring the road traffic police in the area up to a level ‘not seen before.’
This follows ongoing concerns from residents and local speedwatch groups about speeding in Frome. Earlier this year, Community Speedwatch volunteer Ashley Reay reported that drivers are reaching speeds of nearly 80mph on the A361 Frome Bypass, which recently became a 50mph zone.
The road is used by around 15,000 motorists a day and has seen five fatalities in the last five years. Four of them between 2023 and 2024.
Ashley also said that areas around Frome College and Warminster Road have seen their speeding numbers double in 2026 to date compared with 2025.
At the AGM, The Police and Crime Commissioner, Clare Moody (PCC) said in her speech, that she wanted to recognise the work of the Mendip CVSW team, which has its headquarters in Frome. She said they are a ‘shining example of what the public can do to try and make their local roads safer.’
Ashley said, “It is still disappointing that there have been many deaths in and around the Frome area over the past five years or so, but now with these extra police measures, it is hoped that the public will at last realise that excess speeds can only result in one thing and that is tragedy.”
A total of 73,555 vehicles were monitored in Frome in the past year, with 2,105 warning letters sent to drivers.
