The Lions Club of Frome will be holding this year’s annual Charity Golf Day at Orchardleigh Golf Club, Frome, on Friday 17th May.

Lion Mike Geake reports, “The chosen charity for the 2019 event is Nova Sports and Coaching – a non-profit organisation which delivers high quality inclusive sport to individuals of all abilities. The sports offered include athletics, rugby, football Boccia – powerchair football, wheelchair basketball, dodgeball and tennis. Their Outreach programme visits schools, colleges and community groups to introduce disabled and non-disabled individuals, in Bath/Frome and the surrounding areas, to new accessible sports. Whilst the holiday camp programme provides opportunities for fun, inclusive sports activities outside of school term-times. For more information visit their website www.novasportsandcoaching .co.uk.

“Voluntary contributions make a vital difference to the activities that they are able to offer and, crucially, through the purchase of specialist equipment, who they are able to benefit. We hope that with support from the golf day, they will be able to extend this valuable service to more people in our area.

“The success of the day depends not just upon support from the participants who take part, but also upon the generosity of our sponsors. We are delighted once again to be able to welcome Western Building Consultants (http://www.westernbuildingconsultants.com) as our principal sponsor and also our other key sponsors, Lansdown Place Wealth Management, Rogers & Co and Chase de Vere, we thank them all for their kind and most generous support.

“The format for the day will be similar to previous years consisting as follows;-

“18-hole Stableford competition played off full handicap

“Two-tee start, tee times between 08:00 and 11:00

“Various fun competitions at different holes on the way round including;-longest drive, straightest drive, nearest the pin on two par 3s, nearest the pin with the second shot, beat-the-Pro, two-spot, team competitions.

“Cost of entry is £160 for a team of 4 players, which includes a bacon roll and coffee on arrival and buffet lunch after completion of your round

“The format limits us to a maximum of 32 teams – so it is advised to book early to avoid disappointment using the team entry form,  which is available from the Lions Club of Frome website www.frome lions.org.uk or email keith.mcleod@fromelions. org.uk

“If you are unable to play but would like to support the Lions, there are still sponsorship opportunities available for the event. details can also be obtained from keith.mcleod@frome lions.org.uk.

Family-run timber business Batsford Timber is marking 37 years in business, continuing to serve customers across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas.

  • Frome teen wins pickleball silver after injury comeback

A teenager from Frome has won a silver medal at a national pickleball championship just months after returning to the sport following a serious arm injury.

Kai Santano, 15, competed in the Young Persons Championships at Courtside in Stourbridge in June, taking second place in the mixed-age doubles category alongside 11-year-old Seb Oprea.

The result comes only four months after Kai returned to play following surgery for a double break to his left arm and a partial wrist dislocation, sustained while skateboarding in Victoria Park just one week before he was due to compete in the National Championships.

His mum Laurie said, “He absolutely destroyed his arm and was in a full cast from October until December. He wasn’t allowed to do any contact sports until 1st February. He’s done really well to get back into it.”

  • Mark of excellence awarded to Frome green spaces

An international mark of excellence for parks and green spaces has been awarded to Frome’s Victoria Park and Mary Baily Playing Field.

The Green Flag Award was presented after judges visited in April, who explored the wide range of activities, facilities and community projects that take place across the parks and how they are managed by Frome Town Council.

Assessors praised the parks’ welcoming atmosphere, strong community involvement and features such as the toddler play area, community bowls club, murals, a carved bench created from a heritage tree felled in 2025 due to a fungal infection and the community cafe.
