FROME College has praised the ‘grit and determination’ of its A-Level and GCSE students to overcome challenges caused by the pandemic, as they collected their results last week.
This year, following the cancellation of exams, grades were awarded through a process of teacher assessment, against national standards, approved and awarded by exam boards.
The government is not publishing performance data for any schools or colleges this year due to the varying impact of the pandemic. “A healthy opportunity, which allows us to concentrate on individual successes rather than percentages and figures,” said principal Emma Reynolds.
About the college’s A-Level results, she said, “We are so proud of this cohort of young people who have shown such resilience and determination over the past 18 months. These results are richly deserved and rightly awarded.”
The college has congratulated Iris Shulman and Ben Nicolson who have been accepted into Cambridge, as well as Charlie Whiting, Stephanie Verwey and Max Brewster who will be going to Oxford. Special mention for achieving particularly exceptional grades also went to Isabel Hanney and May Southgate. Excellent progress was made by Patrick Mead, Adam Baker and Nico Van Hoen. Chloe Nicholls was also commended as she progresses to her apprenticeship.
Principal Emma Reynolds said, “These are just a few names, amongst many, who have excelled in this challenging year, with the vast majority making their firm or insurance choice for university.
“Thank you to all staff, teaching and support staff, who have maintained college progress over the past year and whose work creates successful futures for our young people. A special thanks must also go to all parents and families whose support and energy have made these results possible. Your children are a credit to you.
“Finally, the year 13 prom last month was a lovely event, which celebrated the year group’s success and potential. Thank you to everyone who attended and especially to those people who organised the event so well.
“I wish you a bright, happy and successful future and hope to see you soon.”
As the college’s GCSE and BTEC students collected their results, principal Emma Reynolds paid tribute to their tremendous efforts.
“Frome College students should be really proud of their GCSE and BTEC results received today (12th August),” she said. “Having faced great uncertainty and significant disruption, the sheer grit and determination students have shown through the pandemic has been tremendous.
“Congratulations to Mary Evans, Melissa Verwey, Willow Hunter, Aimee Uttley, Jack Bishop, Sophie Gilson, Frankie Polakova, Danny Nguyen, Jacob Roberts and Bethan Davis, who between them gained an outstanding 89 qualifications at level 9 and 8 – the highest possible achievement.
“Equal congratulations go to Lana Lewis, Amy Barter, Elen Northeast, Tilly Kempshall, Lucy Sheppard, Kira Ramnarain, Violet Venables Ziminski, Izzy Neale, Filip Borek and Millie Fay Light who made the most progress from year 9 to year 11.
“Even though final examinations were cancelled, this should not detract from the significant hard work and commitment put in by our students, with the outstanding support of parents and college staff. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our teachers who have ensured each young person has been awarded results that truly reflect the standard they had achieved.
“We look forward to welcoming our new year 12 back to college on Wednesday 8th September.”
