FROME Guided Walks (FGW) organisers have been busy in 2022 with the group taking people on a variety of different general and specialised walks.
The group say, “FGW had a very successful season, leading walks on not only the general history of the town, but also many specialised local walks on various subjects, as well as taking part in many of the major events in the creative and heritage calendar.
“This included the Frome Festival where several walks, in collaboration with Frome Museum’s ‘Celebrated Women of Frome’ exhibition, guided participants around many of the town locations associated with the women being highlighted. Frome Guided Walks also undertook the annual ‘Frome Society for Local Study’ town walk during the festival period, which once again raised funds for the Frome Festival itself.
“In November, FGW was once again asked by the Frome Town Council to contribute walks to their Annual Walking Festival. This year, it included old favourites along with some new additions.
“The former included ‘Sense of Place’ where participants learned about the history and folklore of many of the streets in Frome, as well as the changing processes of how places in the town are named; and ‘A-Z of Frome’, which as the name suggests, was a guided tour taking walkers from Aldhelm – the traditional founder of Frome – through to Zion Chapel, representative of the influence non-conformity had on the town.
“A highlight of this Walking Festival, however, was the introduction of ‘A Very Short Walk Around the Long History of Frome’. Led by Frome Guided Walker, Lisa Kenwright. This was an open access to all walk, being completely on the flat, which although remained in the area around the Cheese & Grain car park for its 40 minutes duration, nevertheless packed centuries of history into that time.
“Elsewhere, during the year, FGW completed several bespoke walks, including one for Ukrainian refugees and another for a branch of the Women’s Institute in Somerset.”
