Many people in Frome are increasingly concerned about the welfare of people they come across sleeping out in shop doorways, fields and woods around the town, especially as winter approaches and the weather gets colder.
Fair Housing for Frome is organizing a public meeting at Frome Town Hall about street homelessness and rough sleeping, on Thursday 24th October, at 7.30pm. The meeting will address questions such as: What can I do if I come across someone who’s sleeping out? What services are available for them? Are there plans for another Zero Nights emergency shelter this winter? How can I help? Is there more that we can do for homeless people in our town?
The evening will include a presentation from Rachel Inman of Elim Connect Centre in Wells about a new scheme called Housing First, which has an excellent track record in Scandinavia and the USA, for getting rough sleepers directly into a safe, warm home, where they can address any other issues that they face.
“It seems outrageous and unacceptable that there are people in our town with literally no roof over their head,” says FHfF development worker Alison Murdoch. “This is an opportunity for anyone who’s concerned about street homelessness to come together, find out what’s already going on, and share their suggestions and concerns. Please join us, and pass the word along to anyone else who may be interested.” Entry and refreshments will be free of charge, although donations are always welcome.
