TWO local residents are urging the community to read a book about combatting climate change.
Karen Eberhardt-Shelton and Charlie Brandt say, “We feel the book, Climate: A New story by Charles Eisenstein, is so important, informative, thought-provoking, and full of historical records, and a huge variety of well documented information that is essential in terms of what’s going on here in Frome and the world in general.
“This book, published in 2018, is a comprehensive overview of the world we currently inhabit. It defines how the Earth manages itself, how humanity is affecting it, and the need for a full awakening of our ecological consciousness.
“We reduce nature’s functions to their ‘value’ for our benefit in multiple ways which are proof of abandoned respect and concern for the natural world.
“Here in Frome, an example of this is converting the wild space at Saxonvale into a planned development site, thus reducing admiration for the natural world to a finite value for human purposes. Love the Earth for what it is, not merely for what it provides. What we really need is a change of heart and mind based on interconnected love.
“We need to care for and safeguard our local environment, not exploit it; shift from domination to participation, improve life by cooperating with natural processes, not subduing them. The ecological crisis should be a wake-up call to convert to holistic integration with the Earth, not a challenge to overcome the obstacles and stay on our present course. The old story of ‘man over nature’ is an illusion of human superiority and requires elimination.
“This book spells out the necessity for a deep awareness of what’s lacking, what’s needed, and what will avert the multiple levels of catastrophe we’re heading toward. This hugely stirring and thought-provoking book should be considered essential reading for everyone!”
