A recently retired eye surgeon with 40 years’ experience of eye surgery, Zdenek Gregor, attended a meeting of the Somerset Sight charity at Frome Medical Centre on 4th November for local volunteers.
Zdenek Gregor talked inspiringly about his work as an eye surgeon and the treatment of the most common eye conditions causing blindness and has now joined the charity as a trustee.
Somerset Sight is the independent charity which has been providing support and advice to sight impaired people across Somerset since 1919. Since the 1990s the charity has had a Volunteer Visiting Service whereby local volunteers visit blind or partially sighted people in their own homes for company, help and trips out.
The charity reports, “We are very pleased to welcome Zdenek Gregor both as a volunteer visitor and as a new Trustee for the charity. Zdenek is a recently retired eye surgeon with 40 years’ experience of eye surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, the leading provider of eye health services in the UK and a world class centre of excellence for ophthalmic research and education.”
Sue Worringham a volunteer visitor who lives in Frome said afterwards, “It was not only interesting and useful to hear Zdenek’s talk, but also inspiring to realise how much can be done medically to help those who are beginning to lose their sight, and to support people to retain as much of their independence as possible.”
