A local resident has trekked around 114 miles in three days along the Jurassic Coast Path in memory of her friend, who had cancer for 17 years.
Shaz Barton completed the walk last month on Saturday 29th June, hiking for around 14 hours a day, carrying around 20kg for Macmillan Cancer Support to honour her friend Kaye Herbert.
Before taking on the challenge, Shaz said she was hoping to complete it in five days by walking around 15 to 20 miles per day. “A friend was supposed to join me on day five but I finished it in three days!” says Shaz.
Shaz said two years ago she had a motorbike accident and now one of her legs is in ‘constant pain.’
“I am bruised and burnt and would wake up at 2am after about four hours of sleep to carry on the challenge, after hiking for about 14 hours a day,” said Shaz. “There were even 35mph winds at one point throughout the night.
“One of the main challenges was also that the heights of the hills in some places were nearly vertical. Being away from my wife and son was also more of a challenge than any of the hills!”
“But the highlights were that the views were amazing, especially near Durdle Door.”
Shaz said she is keeping the fundraising link open if anyone else would like to donate in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.
