Tues. 22nd Sept. FA Cup 1st Rd Qualifying Frome Town 4 AFC Stoneham 1

Jake Jackson, Joe O’Loughlin, Kane Simpson and Jon Davies’ goals provide berth for The Robins through to Second Round Qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup, following a 4-1 win over AFC Stoneham.

The Wessex League Premier side were left stunned as Jackson evaded their defence and slotted home within three minutes in South East Somerset.

A second came on the 21st minute mark as O’Loughlin followed up a Jon Davies cross, which had been mishandled by The Purp’s ‘keeper, and managed to guide the ball home to double the hosts lead.

Simpson scored his fourth in two FA Cup ties this season, as he beat the Stoneham defence for pace and calmly passed the ball past their on-looking ‘keeper.

The Purps quickly pulled a goal back through Sam Woodward’s shot from the edge of the box, which nestled in The Robins net.

Several chances came to The Robins following the restart, with Simpson spurning two opportunities to extend his side’s lead and his impressive goal tally in the competition.

Midfielder Chris Peck also nearly scored his first of the season as he connected onto Jon Davies’ corner, but it sailed over the bar.

A Jon Davies penalty sealed an impressive victory for The Robins with ten minutes left on the clock, as he placed his shot from ten yards to the left and sealed his side’s place in the next round.

  • Christmas stories at local pub

A Frome storyteller will share three Christmas stories he has written with audiences at a local pub this month.

Mike Rogers will share his stories at The Crown Inn in Keyford on Wednesday 10th December, at 7.30pm.

He said, “One story deals with the events surrounding the Nativity, but in a way which is likely to be unfamiliar. Another is linked to that fine old English Christmas tradition, the Mummers’ Play. The third takes place in a care home.

“I have chosen three stories from those I have written over the past three decades and more, which will leave you happier after you have heard them. All you have to do in response is take that happiness away with you and share it with others. "

Johnny said, “I have been a designer for about eight years but had my own brand and shop in Frome for five years. I design menswear with a mix of ready-to-wear and also made-to-measure. "

Counties 1 Southern South

Frome RFC 24 – 8 Swanage & Wareham

Frome RFC welcomed Swanage & Wareham RFC to The Lane on Saturday and, with the visitors sitting at the top of Counties 1 Southern South, Frome knew they would have a touch encounter ahead of them.

Frome started strongly and attacked deep into Swans half right from the kick-off.

The first scrum set the tone, with the home side dominating and with the Swans pack unable to cope, Frome were awarded a penalty. Taking a quick tap penalty and going through a string of phases, the backline released centre Cory Plumridge to bulldoze his way over for an early try, the conversion being added by full-back, Max Stickley.

  • Popular Christmas Tree Festival returns to Christ Church

A Christmas Tree Festival is returning to Christ Church from 8th to 14th December.

Over 30 Christmas trees will be on display, representing schools, charities and local organisations.

The church will be open from 10am until 4pm each day for visitors to wander round and enjoy the trees.

Vicar of Christ Church and St Mary’s Church, Rev Liz Dudley, said, “It’s amazing how varied the trees are. They are so cleverly decorated to reflect the aims or activities of the organisation represented.

“We are really looking forward to this and we hope lots of people drop in to enjoy it. For seven days at the darkest time of the year, the church is full of light, leading us towards the hope and joy of Christmas itself.”

  • Football stalwart honoured at special match

Local footballing stalwart Graham Clarke was celebrated for his contribution to the sport in Frome when he was invited to be an honorary mascot at a Frome Town FC game.

Graham is a well-known figure in Frome’s football history after being a key part of the town’s football community for many years, having previously managed the Frome Collegians.

He also trained footballer Tyrone Mings, who went on to play for England and now plays for Aston Villa. Graham’s dedication to the sport and to the local area was recognised when he was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) by Her Majesty the Queen a few years ago.

To celebrate all Graham has done for football locally, Frome Town FC invited him to be an honorary mascot for the evening at the game against Larkhall. He joined local children from Frome Town United on the pitch and the crowd gave him a huge round of applause for everything he has achieved for football in Frome.

Thursday 27th November

Frome Stars vs Spires

What a treat to start a game in the dry! Frome got off to a great start, taking control of the ball immediately.

Our pro holding shooting Nat held space effectively, despite working against a tall defender. Hats off to Nat for some great defensive work further up court too.

The second quarter saw some lovely defence, with Chloe making her debut for Stars as WD. GK Freya and GD Lucy fell into a nice rhythm within the D, working together to pick off overheads and rebounds.

  • Frome group hosts screening of Gaza documentary

The next event by Frome Friends of Palestine is a screening of The Phoenix of Gaza.

Directed by Yousef Al-Helou, the 50-minute film captures the beauty and resilience of Gaza’s residents before its destruction.

Organisers say, “Shot in July 2023, it serves as an archive of Gaza’s cultural, social and recreational life, showcasing ordinary moments like children playing and families enjoying the beach. The film, which premiered in London in February 2025, highlights the impact of the ongoing conflict on the community in Gaza.”

The film will be shown at 7pm on Tuesday 9th December at Trinity Hall, Trinity Street, Frome BA11 3DE. A Middle Eastern themed buffet will be served at 6.30pm.

Following the screening there will be a Q&A with the director. Admission is £10, payable on the door.

  • Cyclists take on Catherine Hill as Cobble Wobble returns

The iconic Cobble Wobble returned last month, with cyclists of all ages and abilities tackling the challenging sprint up Frome’s Catherine Hill.

Over 1,000 people lined the hill to cheer the cyclists vying to reach the top as quickly as possible. Over the course of the day, 150 participants signed up to take part.

  • Frome’s Christmas tree shines light on White Ribbon campaign

Frome’s Christmas tree is adorned with 100 giant white ribbons this year, as part of an international campaign to end violence against women and girls.

The white ribbons form part of the council’s wider effort to raise awareness of White Ribbon UK, the leading charity in England and Wales engaging men and boys to help end violence against women and girls (VAWG). This year’s campaign theme, ‘We Speak Up’, highlights the importance of positive action in creating a world where ‘everyone is safe, equal and respected.’

Cllr Anne Hills, who is leading the White Ribbon campaign at Frome Town Council, said, “There are a million and one ways we can all take action to make the world a safer place for women and girls and a safer place for women and girls is a safer place, full stop.
