The only Valentine gas lamp in the world stands at the top of the steep cobbled Catherine Hill in Frome, drawing many tourists up to a welcome resting place on a seat near the lamp.
A complete restoration of the lamp (24 years after its creation) has been recently carried out by local resident, Reg Ling, and it was once again ready, in all its splendour, for the annual Valentine gas lamp lighting ceremony on Valentine’s Day.
The start of the ceremony was marked by the firing of a rocket high into the sky over Frome, summoning locals to join this now traditional event whilst enjoying a glass of complimentary hot mulled wine and a selection of fresh fruit, donated by a local supermarket.
Frome Town Crier, Mike Bishop, announced the start of the ceremony as Reg Ling appeared down the steps dressed in his top hat, lamplighter’s tailcoat and carrying a Victorian lamplighter’s pole and lantern.
Over 60 people attended the ceremony despite the freezing temperature and constant drizzle. Some had also brought their own lanterns. Their dedication was rewarded by a surprise visit by ITV West Country, who broadcast the event ‘live’.
Christopher and Jo from Surrey were interviewed – they had made a special journey to stay in Frome to witness the event.
Christopher said, “I saw the event advertised when walking through Frome and brought Jo there that evening. Even though it was wet and cold, we both stayed there for an hour and spoke with relatives of Reg, who told us the 25 year story of the lighting of the Valentine lamp. Also speaking with Reg himself, we found it all very interesting and wish he would have more support in what he is doing as it is a nice quirky thing he is bringing to the town itself.
His partner Jo said, “It was a wonderful experience, with the love an care that Reg has put in to this lamp year after year, it’s not strange that people have come from miles around to see an original oil lamp being lit. With Reg’s good humour to warm our spirits it didn’t seem too cold to share some kisses beside this special valentines day lamp with the one I love.”
They, like many couples who attended the ceremony, were glad to oblige the TV crew by sharing a Valentine’s Day kiss for the camera.
A number of people were keen to express their support for this special Frome tradition by signing up as Friends of the Valentine Gas Lamp. Anyone else wishing to do can easily register their support by email to enquiries@valentine gaslamp.com
