Rodden Lake stream footpath to close for upgrade

A SECTION of footpath near Rodden Lake Stream is due to close on Friday 26th January for safety and improvement works by Network Rail.

Footpath FR 14/6 will be closed from its junction with the A361, continuing northwest onto FR 14/5 to the northwest side of the railway embankment and will improve the existing railway crossing at the site.

The order will become effective on Friday 26th January and will continue until Friday 1st March at the latest, unless otherwise advised.

  • New survey launched for community organisations and charities Community groups and social enterprises are invited to take part in a new survey designed to capture the funding needs, challenges and strengths of Frome’s vibrant voluntary and community sector. The survey, being run by Frome Town Council and Locality UK, is open to a wide range of not-for-profit organisations, including clubs, community groups, charities, social enterprises, arts organisations, community venues and more – of all sizes. “We know that community organisations and social enterprises are working harder than ever to support local people – often with limited resources. This survey is a chance for us to listen, learn, and explore how future funding and support can best meet the needs of Frome’s voluntary and community sector,” said Johannes Moeller from Locality UK, a national membership network supporting community organisations, who have been commissioned to carry out this anonymous survey.   • Supergrass play sold-out gig to support community campaign. Britpop icons Supergrass took to the stage at a packed Cheese and Grain delivering a fundraising gig in support of the local campaign to save Packsaddle Fields from development. The sell-out show, which was a headline Frome Festival event, took place on Friday 11th July with support from local indie band Lumley. All ticket sale proceeds are being donated to People for Packsaddle’s fundraising campaign. The group is urgently trying to raise £10,000 to cover legal costs in their effort to prevent development on Packsaddle Fields, located on the northern edge of Frome. Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey, who lives in Frome, supports the campaign. The band performed their debut album I Should Coco in full to mark its 30th anniversary, followed by a selection of their well-known songs, including Alright, Caught by the Fuzz, and Mansize Rooster.   • Frome Festival – Thousands enjoy Frome’s 10-day celebration of arts and culture Thousands of people enjoyed this year’s ‘record-breaking’ Frome Festival, which saw over 280 events run in more than 50 venues in and around the town over 10 days. From 5th to 13th July, Frome was filled with music, food, art, theatre, poetry, storytelling workshops and creative activities. Top highlights included a headline show by Britpop icons Supergrass, who performed a sell-out performance at the Cheese and Grain in aid of local campaigners People for Packsaddle. Other highlights included the Food Feast, which saw people pack out the Market Yard to enjoy a range of cuisines and live music; a showcase from Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club’s house band; evenings with leading comedians Lou Sanders and Andy Zaltzman and a wide range of music, including Guy Chambers, Gary Stringer from Reef, the Miki Berenyi Trio, Rokia Koné, and a one-off performance by Florence & The Machine’s harpist, Tom Moth.   • Roll up! Roll up! Frome Carnival Family Funday this month The Frome Carnival Family Funday will be held on Saturday 19th July at Victoria Park. The day will feature all the usual favourites including local stalls from groups and charities, the dog show, bonniest baby competition and the selection of this year’s carnival royalty. Organiser, Mandy Morgan said, “We are looking forward to holding the event and welcoming the community to join us for all the usual activities and performances from Frome groups.” New to the fun day this year is the carnival team’s very own ride-on train. “We were previously borrowing the Lions’ train. Harry, our shed manager, had the opportunity to purchase a ride-on lawnmower, and he’s done it up into a train. It looks great.” With around a £2,000 shortfall this year, the carnival team are keen to raise as much money as possible at this year’s Family Fun Day. “We really need a good fun day,” said Mandy. “The Food Festival has very kindly let us have a stall where we sell cakes, and we usually make some money there too.   • ‘For Dads Sake’ - new group launches to support dads’ mental health A Group for dads has launched in Frome to provide a network of support and a space for dads to talk about their mental health and share experiences. For Dads Sake launched in June, founded by four local men - Max, Wayne, Alex and Ben - and offers a space where local dads can talk, share advice and form friendships and connections with others who may have shared experiences. “Dads of all different ages, with children of all different ages, from anywhere in the area are welcome to join the group,” said Max, one of the dads leading the group. “Although we are born in Frome, the hope is that it will attract dads from all over the surrounding areas.   • Nine-year-old boy cycles 153 miles for heart charity in memory of dad A nine-year-old boy has raised over £2,000 for the British Heart Foundation by cycling 153 miles in memory of his dad, Sam Oatley, who died in 2024 from a heart attack. Lewis Oatley, who goes to Vallis First School, completed 29 bike rides in and around Frome throughout June to raise funds for the cardiovascular research charity. Initially, Lewis set out to cycle 100 miles but ended up exceeding his target. “He cycled near enough every day in June,” said his mum, Caroline. “It worked out that he cycled just over five miles every day. “He would cycle to school on his bike and then cycle home and do an extra loop. He’s gone down the lanes by us and then longer rides by the cycle paths; he’s gone to football training and around the track there; he was doing extra laps before school and after. In the evenings we would just go and do six miles on the country lanes around Berkley.” Speaking about his challenge, Lewis gave a presentation recently in assembly at school. “In his own words, he said it had been fun and exciting and some of the journeys were tiring,” said Caroline. “There were a couple of times when he said his legs were tired, but he has been so motivated to get on his bike and hasn’t moaned once. One day he did 13 miles and then got up and went out again with his brother around the green."   • Frome Town FC kicks off new era with fresh ownership and big community plans Frome Town Football Club has entered an exciting new chapter, with a change in ownership, fresh leadership and a renewed focus on the community and long-term sustainability. The club has been acquired by FTFC Ltd., and American businessman Courtney Fong has been named the new chair of Frome Town FC (pending FA approval). Courtney, who brings a strong background in leadership and community development, promises to usher in a new era of openness, engagement and financial stability. Courtney, who is based in the USA, represents a growing trend of American involvement in English football following in the footsteps of several Premier League and Football League clubs. “This is more than a change in ownership; it’s a fresh start built on the passion and pride of our supporters and community,” said Courtney. “We’re committed to making Frome Town FC a club that thrives on and off the pitch, with a home that’s open and welcoming to all.” Lease approved Frome Town Council has also approved a new lease for Badgers Hill stadium and grounds. The lease has been granted to Badgers Hill Ltd., a company owned by FTFC Ltd. The council will be leasing out the site for £32,000 per annum for 23 years with an option to buy during that time.   • Frome residents raise over £5,000 to support families in Palestine Frome residents have raised over £5,000 to support families affected by the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the West Bank. A series of community-led fundraising initiatives included a sponsored walk/run challenge, a bake sale, and a town centre march. As part of a national initiative, Striding for Palestine, 15 local residents walked, ran or jogged a symbolic 107km between 15th May (Nakba Day – the annual day of commemoration for Palestinians) and 15th June. “The distance represents the journey between Occupied East Jerusalem and Gaza,” explained Angelique, one of the participants. “This virtual challenge, undertaken in aid of Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), highlights the physical and emotional distances Palestinians are forced to endure, while raising critical funds for life-saving medical support.” Throughout the month, participants tracked their progress on a virtual map reflecting the recent history of Gaza and the West Bank. “Medical Aid for Palestinians works for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees, providing immediate medical aid and supporting the long-term development of Palestinian healthcare systems,” added Angelique.
