NUISANCE pigeons under Rodden Road Bridge will soon be a thing of the past as Frome Town Council and Network Rail join forces to sort out the problem.
Pigeons nesting underneath the railway bridge has been an on-going problem for a few years, with local residents calling the issue a health hazard.
But earlier this month Frome Town Council announced it will be contributing around £4,000, with Network Rail paying the same, to ‘pigeon-proof’ the bridge.
Town clerk, Paul Wynne said, “This is a little outside of the norm – we don’t own the bridge or have any responsibility for the cleanliness and upkeep of the road and the pavement underneath. But these works should help keep the road and the pavement cleaner and it’s for this reason we feel it’s right to contribute to this project.
“Necessarily, the works will involve a road closure here, but we’re hopeful that Network Rail and County Highways will do it at night. And the proposed window for the work is early November, with exact dates to be confirmed as soon as possible. Network Rail is planning to use the closure to complete some guttering repairs and other improvements to the bridge, too.”
Local councillor and resident, Adam Boyden who campaigned about the problem said, “It’s really good news that finally something is being done. The main battle was getting Network Rail to admit responsibility for the problem and to come up with a comprehensive solution. It’s a shame that Frome Town Council has had to pay half the bill but they do reach out when its in the interests of the community. I hope this is the end of the problem.”
