Funding supports music group for young adults with learning disabilities

A new music group for young adults with learning disabilities is being launched near Frome following major funding from The National Lottery Community Fund.

Jackdaws Music Education, in Great Elm, has launched The Music Man Project Jackdaws, after receiving £20,000 from the National Lottery.

The group, based at the charity’s studio in Great Elm, will run every Wednesday during term time from 11am to 2pm.

The project is being delivered in partnership with The Music Man Project, a charity which teaches children and adults with learning disabilities to sing, sign and play music.

Led by Kate Adams, sessions will include singing, signing and instrumental activities, as well as opportunities for participants to socialise and build friendships.

Founded in 1993, Jackdaws provides music education opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.

Artistic Director Saffron van Zwanenberg said, “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way. Alongside additional support from Somerset Community Foundation, this funding enables us to build on the experience and expertise we have developed through our work in SEND settings with children and young people and extend that support to young adults.”

The funding will help establish the project as a long-term part of Jackdaws’ community programme, supporting young adults with learning disabilities as they move from school into adult life.
