FROME’S Jan Lake will complete a role reversal for ex-racing dogs in need, when she runs on their behalf in a March half marathon.
Jan, Chair of Trustees with Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE) has recently braved extreme weathers in preparation for the event in Bideford.
Jan explained why she is so determined. She said, “During the last 10 years I have helped GRWE rescue many hundreds of dogs who are in desperate need of help. Now, in the grip of a double-dip recession animal charities are very much in need of support, as the number of dogs being abandoned and abused has never been higher.
“I am going to run this half marathon to support the dogs currently in the care of GRWE, and for those out there in need, who I have yet to meet.”
Greyhounds often finish their racing careers with injuries, and GRWE faces huge annual vet bills to ready them for rehoming. Jan herself can empathise with the lot of her dogs, and will run despite having had major surgery on her back.
With the big day closing in Jan has set up an online donations page where you can show support for her, and GRWE’s retired canine runners. If you want to donate then please visit www.justgiving.com/Jan-Lake1 or go to www. grwe.com.
