ROCKTOPUS, a rock band for children, visited Trinity First School in Frome to help them record their very own album with four songs dedicated to sport, which they can use in their PE lessons.
Rocktopus are bringing their new school workshop ‘Rock The Sport’ to schools across the country, delivering a day of creative songwriting, funded by the school’s sports premium budget. Every school is left with an album of dynamic songs to use time and time again in their PE lessons.
The day started with the whole school writing a sports day anthem. Each class then had an opportunity to work individually with Rocktopus – writing songs about warm-up, cardio, balance and dance routines.
Trinity First School’s album consists of a whole school song called “Sports Day Song”, year 2 created “My Heart is Pumping Faster Now”, year 3 created “It’s Time to Balance” and year 4 created “Doing the Stretch”.
“We feel that every child has the right to develop their creativity and musicality,” says Andy Hawkings, Rocktopus singer and guitarist. “It made sense to us that the sports premium funds should be used to foster musicality as well as physicality.”
“During our Rock The Sport sessions, we see children engage with PE in a completely different way.” says Tom Veck, Rocktopus drummer and singer. “Children who are sometimes reluctant to participate might contribute a lyric for their song and suddenly they want to move around to it without inhibitions!”
The day was a great success with one year 2 child saying, “We wish Rocktopus could come every day!” The staff also enjoyed the experience. Year 2 staff member Kinga Draws said, “Rocktopus were fantastic with my year 2 class. They got the children up and moving. They took the children’s ideas and came up with a song. It was absolutely brilliant!
Sophie Flower staff member of year 1 said, “The children (and staff!) had such a fabulous day. We are really looking forward to using our music in our PE lessons. What a great way to inspire children of all ages to be active!”

![Town-wide programme brings month of social activities in May
A month-long programme of activities and events is set to take place across the town in May as part of an initiative encouraging residents to connect with themselves, each other and local places.
The scheme, Frome Connects, will run throughout the month and includes a mix of social activities, creative events and informal meet-ups in community spaces.
Highlights include the return of Dress Up Fridays, which began during lockdown and invites people to wear formal clothing or fancy dress and turn the town into their catwalk each Friday.
Set-piece moments include a Kate Bush-themed flashmob (Running Up That [Catherine] Hill) on 30th May, followed by a bell peal at St John’s Church where the bells will play Running Up That Hill.
There will also be a whole-town drone photo on Friday 30th May, with everyone encouraged to ‘look up’ at around 12.30pm.
