A long-time member of the Frome Writers’ Collective (FWC) has released a new sci-fi novel, which was celebrated at a recent launch event at the Archangel pub earlier this month.
Jac Forsyth’s new ‘high concept’ sci-fi novel is titled Ørma and is set in the near future where war is televised and turned into a reality TV show for entertainment.
Jac said, “Ørma is a soft sci-fi set in the near future, so less about spaceships and more about humans. It is military, as in there is a war and some of the characters are soldiers, but it is also about D&D, reality TV and self-aware furniture. Anyone turning up for hard sci-fi will be wildly disappointed at the lack of subspace physics. I am more interested in what stays the same than in what changes.”
At the launch event, Jac spoke about the many influences on her writing. A member of FWC, Brenda said, “These ranged from fairy tales to Carl Sagan’s Cosmos and from growing up in fear of nuclear war to the optimism implicit in series like Star Trek. Her earlier career as a photographer involved a lot of travel, and on one journey she met a soldier who had served in Afghanistan and wanted to share his story.
“Jac also spoke about her journey to publication with the help of FWC’s Silver Crow Books assessment service and her talk prompted a wealth of questions from the audience.
“Ørma is to be the first of a series of novels and paperback copies are available from Winstone’s Hunting Raven in Frome.”
