SCOUTS in Frome spent the last weekend in November taking part in a winter camp, complete with a 25km walk round Somerset.
The 26th and 27th November saw the 1st and 7th Frome Scouts’ winter camp.
The group’s Jen Arnall-Culliford reports, “Saturday was spent building cardboard dens to sleep in and route planning in advance of the district-wide hike on the Sunday.
“In the evening the Scouts enjoyed a fish and chip dinner, with a cinema evening using a movie projector which they borrowed from Frome’s excellent Share Shop.
“This was the first time the group had taken part in the East Somerset District hike and for many of the scouts it was their first experience of walking any great distance.
“With Young Leaders helping with the navigation, the two teams from Frome tackled the circular route of some 25km, starting and finishing in Langport and taking in views of the Somerset Levels from Aller and the Burton Pynsent monument and fighting through the mud between the two. One of the teams made it all of the way around, while the other was defeated only by the fading light with the end tantalisingly close.
“All of the scouts acquitted themselves admirably with their positive approach to any difficulties and excellent map reading. Although it was a long and exhausting weekend, everyone had fun and is looking forward to the next outdoor adventures.”
