Seasonal shows and festive magic coming to Memorial Theatre

The Memorial Theatre in Frome is packed with big shows and festive events in the run-up to Christmas.

From classic rock tributes to heartwarming family shows, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Highlights include T.Rextasy’s homage to glam rock legend Marc Bolan, a Rat Pack-inspired Christmas Swing night, and a Queen tribute concert that will have you dancing in the aisles.

Families can also look forward to a festive panto with Sleeping Beauty and a special children’s Christmas party with Santa himself.

Here is the line-up

Sat. 23rd Nov, 7.30pm, T-Rextasy – The Greatest Hits

Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era.  With Bolan’s special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs, the band had a string of huge hits throughout the 1970s including Love to Boogie, Telegram Sam, Jeepster and 20th Century Boy.

T.Rextasy have now been performing around the world for over 20 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc’s very own T.Rex.  The band is now accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management.  The band has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’.

Truly a rock’n’roll concert for all ages – If you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this show is for you!

Friday 29th Nov, 7.30pm, Born To Swing – Christmas Spectacular

Following a run of sell-out shows, a first-class evening of live entertainment is promised by one of the UK’s finest Swing and Big Band artists. Fresh from his success in ITV’s ‘Starstruck’ final as Frank Sinatra, Andrew Bourn brings his live band ‘Party at Frank’s’ together to perform their show ‘Born to Swing – Christmas Spectacular’!!

A wonderful celebration of festive tunes from ‘The Ratpack’ along with many more favourites from Nat King Cole, Michael Buble and original arrangements of modern-day classics with a big band twist!!

Andrew tells his story of the 20 years he has enjoyed performing them, including his journey through to the Britain’s Got Talent finals and beyond, recording a top ten alb

um with his band ‘Jack Pack’ and singing for HM King Charles III!

Andrew will be joined by some local special guests so watch this space, and start your Christmas in style!

Sat. 30th Nov, 7.30pm, One Night of Queen

For over 20 years Gary Mullen and The Works have been performing their world- renowned One Night of Queen live concert. They will have you dancing in the aisles, while the band pays tribute to the stage theatrics, showmanship, and music of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees: Queen.

In 2000, Gary Mullen won the Granada TV programme “Stars in Their Eyes” with his performance as Queen’s lead singer: Freddie Mercury. Mullen’s embodiment of Freddie Mercury resulted in him gaining 864,838 votes in the show’s Live Grand Final. The number of fans who voted for Mullen was more than double that of the runner-up, thus setting an all-time record for votes in the history of the programme.

For over two decades, Gary Mullen & The Works have performed to sold-out audiences around the world, playing more than 2,500 live shows to audiences in over 20 countries – performing in many of the same venues that Queen have played at around the world.

So if you’re ready to rock ‘n’ roll, don’t miss your chance to celebrate One Night of Queen with Gary Mullen & The Works! The Show DOES go on!

Sat. 7th Dec, 7.30pm, That’ll Be the Day – So This Is Christmas

Get into the festive spirit with That’ll Be the Day’s Christmas Show So This is Christmas! Join the Memorial for an unforgettable evening of music and laughter where hilarious comedy sketches blend with heartwarming renditions of all your favourite Christmas songs.

Those well-known festive classics combine with the hits of Christmas past and present to whisk you away on a musical journey like no other. This delightful mix of music performed by a hugely talented cast, will leave you singing, dancing, and laughing; it’s the perfect way to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year.

Sunday December 8th, 2.30 – 5.00pm, Children’s Christmas Party

Meet Santa in his Grotto. Lunch box and drink for the kids. Party dancing with PDJ Disco. All children get a gift from Santa. Entry just £8.50 per child (Adults Free)

  • Plant sale returns this month

Get ready with your hessian bags and boxes, as the Frome Selwood Horticultural Society, along with Frome in Bloom, will host their annual plant sale on Saturday 23rd May.

The sale at Selwood Academy will feature tables full of annuals, perennials and vegetables. There will also be plenty of homemade produce, including cakes and jams, as well as garden books and bric-a-brac.

Cash and card payments will be accepted, and the sale will run from 9.30am to 12pm.

Frome is well served for gardening interest groups, and this annual event showcases two of the most established. The Frome Selwood Horticultural Society was founded in 1966, while Frome in Bloom was formed in 1977 and is known for its annual awards for planting in homes, businesses and open spaces.

  • Somerset Council to spend £1,500 per car park to review parking charges

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

It will cost Somerset Council nearly £1,500 per car park to review whether new parking charges should be introduced across the county.

The council’s executive committee agreed in March to begin a root-and-branch review of parking charges, which could see a new tiered pricing structure introduced for both on and off-street parking.

A total of £272,824 has been allocated from the council’s parking reserve to pay external consultants to gather evidence on car park usage and inform future proposals, which are expected to come before councillors in the autumn.

Councillor Diogo Rodrigues, who leads the opposition Conservative group, questioned whether the level of spending could be justified given other consultancy costs linked to the council’s transformation programme and changes to the Celebration Mile in Bridgwater.

He raised the issue at a recent meeting of the executive committee. He said, “We know the council is spending up to £20m on consultants to advise on how to save money, more £200,000 on consultants to advise on how much to charge residents to park their cars, and further sums on consultants to advise on road layout changes in Bridgwater.

Bennett and Gaga: The Duets Songbook was performed at Frome Memorial Theatre on 18th April.

The production brought together material from albums including ‘Cheek to Cheek’ and ‘Love for Sale’, reimagined through live jazz performance.

It explored the Great American Songbook through ensemble playing, vocals and improvisation, with a warm response from the audience.

  • Frome promoted to top division in Wiltshire Off Road Running League

Frome Running Club confirmed their first ever promotion into the top division of the Wiltshire Off Road Running League.

The team finished the season level on points with the Royal Wootton Bassett Hounds ‘B’ team but were edged down into second place on individual points scored across each team’s best six races.

Frome can look back with pride on a fantastic campaign, which consisted of eight races staged across Wiltshire between October and February. In total, Frome had 27 different runners participating across the series and was the only club in the second division to participate in all eight races; showing bravery to take part in off road races named ‘Smasher’, ‘Lung-buster’ and ‘Terminator’, and dedication to drive across the length and breadth of Wiltshire. Seven of the Frome team made it to at least half of the league’s races.

  • Exhibition for arts charity’s 40th year off to strong start

A major fundraising exhibition marking the 40th anniversary of Black Swan Arts has got off to a strong start, with half of donated artworks already sold since opening night.

More than 100 supporters attended the preview of THINK XL at the arts centre on 3rd April, alongside donating artists and organisers.

Since then, organisers say around 50 per cent of works have been purchased, including ‘Paris, 2023’ by Ed Bucklow and ‘The Hunt’ by Gracie House, both among the youngest contributors to the appeal.

A total of 40 artists with links to Black Swan Arts since its opening in 1986 have donated work, spanning ceramics, painting, photography, sculpture, textiles and wood carving.

The exhibition is raising funds through three price bands, £40, £140 and £400, alongside a silent auction featuring four higher-value works. Sealed bids can be placed in The Long Gallery and will be opened at 3.45pm on Sunday 10th May, the final day of the exhibition.

  • New space in Mary Baily taking shape

A project to create a new space in Mary Baily Field, co-designed with local young people, is moving into its final stages.

Since January, a group of 12 young people aged 14 to 18 have worked with local organisations Woodland Tribe, Super Roots and Neighbourhood Toolbox on the project, which is funded by Frome Town Council.

They have been learning about the design and build process, taking part in workshops and visiting sites including sawmills and quarries to learn about sustainable buil-ding materials.

The young people’s designs are on display on the noticeboards in Frome Town Hall and the final design and build is expected later in the year.

Corinne Sampson of Woodland Tribe said, “The young people have worked really hard and inspired us and each other throughout the process. We can’t wait to turn their ideas into reality and work with them on the building phase, creating this unique, playful space, truly by and for Frome’s young people.”
