Selwood Academy were in Rockingham for the international Greenpower finals with their car Frome’s Flying Wagon. Teams from as far as Brazil, Northern Ireland, America, Poland, and all over the British Isles attended with as many as 81 cars racing at one time.
After some initial problems with a loose seat belt, wonky wheel washer and a dangling wire, the practice laps all went well.
After clocking up 30.9 miles, the Frome Flying Wagon finished in a fantastic 9th place out of 35 cars. The winning car came from Bristol Grammar school.
The day finished with a change to slick tyres, but it was decided that the slick tyres were slower, so back to wider ones!
Day two started off very wet and windy! With the wider tyres back in place, everything ran smoothly. The first of two races was started in 60th place, but following successful laps, they finished in 44th place out of 81 cars racing.
The second race finished in 49th position and worked out as an average, the team’s overall finishing position was 52.
The academy says, “All of the children get a wonderful experience when competing in the racing, spending time in the pits and working as a team on a car that they have spent many months creating and fine tuning at school. We are always looking for sponsorship for this brilliant experience and to help us make our fantastic car even better!”
