Nine girls from Selwood Academy had the opportunity to go to the University of Bath in December to take part in a girls’ coding competition.
Schools from the local area were invited to enter teams who had designed, developed and coded their own App for a mobile phone or tablet; Selwood entered three teams – and won three prizes.
The event was promoted by the University of Bath Computer Science department and was a follow-on from the recent hugely successful STEM week at Selwood Academy, organised by Phil Brook, head of science. STEM aims to promote science and technology across the curriculum.
Head of IT Andrew Pack said, “Although basic coding is part of the core curriculum nowadays, being asked to design and then code an app takes skill and really stretched and challenged our pupils.”
What was particularly pleasing was the Selwood students were competing with secondary schools in Bath and surrounding areas and managed to win through. The judges particularly commented on their thoughtful and imaginative designs and their confident presentations.
IT teacher Jane Yoell said, “This was a great opportunity for our girls to showcase their skills, we are all really thrilled with their success.”
