SELWOOD Academy is once again celebrating a fun-filled successful year at the school. Throughout the last calendar year, pupils have experienced a huge variety of trips and opportunities including Lyme Regis, Portsmouth docks, a careers day with over 30 providers, caving, camping, battlefields, and Paris.
Our school community has also undertaken successful fundraising events including staff running the Bath Half Marathon for local charity, We Hear You, Children in Need, or wear a hat day for Brain Tumour Research. During the summer the school also put on a sell-out set of back-to-back performances of Mary Poppins at the Merlin Theatre. The festive season was also full of joy with a hugely successful Christmas fair, and excellent carol concert and the fantastic snowmen in the lantern parade.
The school has also been recognised this year with the county for its wellbeing offer for both pupils and staff; has achieved the Gatsby benchmarks for careers education; and been commended on its ‘robust Safeguarding processes’ as part of an external audit.
A recent church school audit also highlighted that pupils’ light shines before others as a result of the incredible opportunities, experiences and education that pupils at Selwood receive. David Bartram OBE, expert advisor for the Department for Education (DFE), undertook a review of the school and celebrated the excellent practice in place, highlighting the very good progress made at the school and commitment to pupil wellbeing as well as the excellent pupil behaviour.
DFE League tables have also been published in December reiterating the academy’s position as the highest performing middle school in the town, as well as one of the highest performing in the south west with exceptional results well above the national average in maths, writing and science.
The school is looking forward to continued growth and development, as well as all the exciting events coming up in the rest of the year including the Year 5 trip to Paris and Disneyland, the Year 7 Paris trip, the Year 8 battlefields trip, skiing, the Year 5 trip to Harry Potter studios, our annual careers day and Matilda the musical!
Selwood remains a school where staff continuously going above and beyond for their school community as a whole and ensure that every child’s light can shine.
