NEW technology and a new look library are on the way for Frome.
Frome is the latest Somerset Library to move to self-service, following its successful introduction in Taunton, Burnham-on-Sea and Bridgwater.
The touch-screen kiosks allow customers to borrow, renew and return books and other items, as well as to check reservations and pay charges.
The library will be temporarily closed from 25th February to 26th March, while self-service equipment is fitted and refurbishment completed. Refurbishment includes the removal of existing library counters and the installation of new, smaller staff points. Signs will be improved and energy efficient lighting installed.
The library building is also home to the Frome Town Council information desk and the Mendip District Council Access Point. The three authorities are working together closely to provide alternatives during the closure and keep disruption to a minimum.
Councillor David Hall, cabinet member with responsibility for libraries said, “Self-service has gone well in other libraries and I’m sure it will be the same for Frome.
“There will be staff on hand to help people get to grips with the new machines and how they work. Once they are up and running they will allow staff to focus on helping visitors get the most out of their library.”
Library users need to bring their membership card and PIN (Personal Identification Number) to use the kiosks. Anyone who doesn’t have a PIN, has forgotten it or wants to change it to something more memorable, can ask a member of library staff or speak to a customer advisor on 0845 345 9177.
While Frome Library is closed, the following alternatives will be in place: Library service: a limited library service will be available in the upstairs library meeting room from Tuesday 26th February to Monday 25th March offering a small lending collection for adults and children and four public access computers with Internet access. This alternative service will be available Monday to Friday, 9.30am – 5.00pm and Saturday, 9.30am – 4.00pm.
Access to the temporary library is via the side door and stairs on the river side of the library. Due to the location of the building works there will be no access to the lift.
Customers can also return and borrow items at any other Somerset or LibrariesWest Library. Items can be renewed online at www.librarieswest.org.uk or by speaking to a customer advisor on 0845 345 9177.
Frome Town Council information desk will relocate temporarily to 5 Palmer Street, Frome, while the library is closed, with the following opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 5.00pm.
Mendip District Council Access Point: will be operating from Somerset County Council offices on Christchurch Street West, whilst the library is closed, with the following opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9.30am – 1.00pm, 2.00pm – 4.30pm (closing at 4.00pm on Fridays).
