WORLD Cup hero, and the only surviving member of the England 1966 team, Sir Geoff Hurst has been given the all clear to return to Frome for his farewell show on Friday 8th March.
The Cheese and Grain made national headlines over the weekend when Sir Geoff was forced to reschedule his performance due to what appeared as a health scare during his performance on Thursday 25th January.
Sir Geoff has since praised venue staff and organisers of the event with an official statement saying, “I would like to personally thank the organisers and all the staff at the Cheese and Grain in Frome for all of their help they gave me.
“The situation was very unfortunate and I’d also like to thank the audience who were fantastic and very understanding of my situation regarding the nosebleed. We eventually got home at 4am after great help from one of the organisers of the show to take me home.
“My UK tour will resume and we are coming back to the Cheese and Grain on March 8th. Hopefully we will see all of the audience back this time. We will have a good night in the normal way and I’m looking forward to it once again. Special thanks to everyone at the Cheese and Grain.”
Co-organiser, Leander Morales said, ‘I’m proud to have worked alongside an exceptional team of people who pulled together to look after our special guest. He really is a national treasure and he couldn’t have been in safer hands. The staff at the Cheese and Grain were amazing! I’s also like to extend my praise to the team at Bath RUH for looking after Sir Geoff Hurst during his short stay. We’re all just glad that he is well!”
According to The Mirror, an audience member at the event said, “Sir Geoff came on at 7.30pm but within about seven minutes his nose began to bleed quite heavily. He said he had had it looked at several days before and they were worried about him having to cancel the show.
“He went off and they did an auction and a raffle and he came back on to a massive applause at 8.30pm. He started doing his anecdotes but it soon started again. He tried to carry on but someone in the crowd shouted, ‘Don’t worry, go get it sorted mate’ and so he went off stage.”
Co-organiser, Graeme Barry added, “Whilst Sir Geoff was keen to continue, it was clear that the most important thing was to ensure Sir Geoff’s health and well-being. He really didn’t want to let down his fans, but we also needed to make sure that Geoff was given the best possible level of care we could offer.
“The team at the Cheese and Grain, especially duty manager Jade, did her upmost which we know Geoff really appreciated. Sir Geoff really wanted to continue his story, but it was decided that the best thing would be to call off the show. Sir Geoff insisted that he must return at a later date, and we’re now, once again honoured to welcome him back.”
People with tickets from the show can use them for the rescheduled show, while tickets are also available to buy at a cost of £29.50 + standard booking fees. A small number of VIP meet and greet tickets are also available. Visit www.cheeseandgrain.com for more information.
