Skateboard deck auction to raise funds for Frome’s skatepark

More than 40 skateboard decks are going on display this month before being auctioned to help fund the town’s new skatepark.

The Great Dexhibition will run from 18th to 27th September at The Station Gallery in the Station Approach, displaying skateboard decks designed by local and national artists.

It has been organised by Frome Skatepark Project (FSP), a volunteer group working to help raise the money needed to build a new skatepark for the town.

The project needs to raise around £400,000, and with the support of Frome Town Council, FSP has now passed the halfway point towards that target.

Kim Martin from Frome Skatepark Project said, “The response to The Great Dexhibition has been incredible. We gave artists a blank skateboard deck and asked them to do whatever they wanted with it and what has come back is an amazing collection of completely unique pieces of art.

“We’ve got work from brilliant artists from Frome and further afield, with an extraordinary range of styles. Seeing more than 40 of them together in one space is going to be pretty special.

“But there’s a bigger purpose behind it. Every deck sold takes us another step closer to the £400,000 we need to build a new skatepark for Frome.

“We’d love people to come along on launch night, enjoy the art, have a drink, watch the live auction and hopefully find a deck they’d love to own. If you can’t make it to the launch night, the exhibition will be open until 27th September and you’ll be able to bid online until the exhibition ends.”

Artists including Cheba, Nicky Knowles, James Lynch, Sepr, Kate Matsevych, Andy Council, vqtkufi (Colm), Mel Day, Paris, Chris Pig, Mutartis and Kate Elkington are among those who have donated their time and creativity to the project, each turning a blank skateboard deck into an original artwork.

The ‘dexhibition’ launches with a special event on Friday 18th September, from 6pm to 9pm, where the online auction will officially go live and everyone is invited.

Kim said, “Whether you want to place an online bid on the night, or afterwards – every successful bid will help bring Frome closer to getting the new skatepark its community has been campaigning for.”

The online auction can be found at  www.galabid.com/great-dexhibition, which is running until 27th September.

  • Residents call for action over school traffic scheme

Concerns have been raised by residents living near a Frome school over the enforcement of a traffic scheme, with reports of congestion, speeding, blocked driveways and verbal abuse. People living near Oakfield Academy are calling for greater enforcement of the Safer School Streets scheme, which they say is failing to prevent traffic problems during school drop-off and pick-up times. The scheme was made permanent last September following an 18-month trial.
