Sleeping Beauty runs from Tuesday 29th December to Saturday 2nd January

TICKETS are flying off the shelves as Frome Musical Theatre Company prepares to put on its new year’s pantomime ‘Sleeping Beauty’, which will run at the Memorial Theatre from Tuesday 29th December to Saturday 2nd January.

FMTC, renowned for being one of the most professional pantomime producers in the area, has been hard at work rehearsing for this year’s show. They will be putting their own touch on a classic fairytale retold for hundreds of years.

When a new Princess is born to King Cactus and Queen Marigold the entire kingdom rejoices! As they celebrate Princess Rose’s christening the Good Fairies bestow gifts of the heart on the child. But, the festivities are rudely interrupted by Bad Witch Hazel, who says she has not received an invitation to the blessing.

In her rage she proceeds to cast an evil curse on the child whereby on her 16th birthday she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die!

FMTC’s pantomime follows Princess Rose as she grows up in the palace under the careful watch of the Good Fairy Lilac and the King’s newly appointed PANTIES (Point And Needle Tip Inspection Experts!) who protect her. Will the spell ever be broken? You’ll have to come along to find out!

As always the show will be packed full of slapstick humour, vibrant costumes and popular music, this year it includes musical numbers from Queen, Christina Perry, ‘Matilda the Musical’ and Disney’s ‘Frozen’.

This year’s  line up includes local talents Caitlin Seal, Alicia Smith, Emma Golay, Jon O’Loughlin, Humphrey Barnes, Teresa Bray, Nicole Wooldridge, Vic Withers, Simon Joyce, Garry Hill, and Oli Wareham.

‘Sleeping Beauty’ follows the recent success of ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Robin Hood’ performed by the company earlier in the year.

Tickets are on sale from the Memorial Theatre box office open 9.30am -1pm Monday to Saturday on 01373 462795 or by booking online at www.frome memorialtheatre.org.uk.

The show runs from Tuesday 29th December – Saturday 2nd January, with matinee performances daily at 2pm plus evening performances on the 29th, 30th December and 2nd January.

Tickets: £13 full price, £11 concessions, £40 family ticket (minimum of two adults), group booking (party of 10 or more) £10 each, available via the box office only.

  • Concerns persist over leisure centre cleanliness

Frustrated residents are calling for improvements to the town’s leisure centre, following repeated concerns about cleanliness and hygiene. Residents have contacted the Frome Times with concerns about the facilities on Princess Anne Road, which was taken over by Freedom Leisure earlier this year after the former operator, Fusion Lifestyle, went into administration. Users had previously raised concerns about the reliability and cleanliness of the facilities, with MP Anna Sabine campaigning for improvements and working with the centre’s managers to make changes.

  • Wild About Frome: Time to get seedy!

Hello, it’s Kerry here from the Frome Seed Library.
Your free, permanent seed swap located inside our fantastic town library. We’ve now reached one of the most exciting times of the year for us seedy folk...seed harvesting time!
But why bother saving seed when you could just grab a cheap packet of seeds from the supermarket next spring?
Well, you see each and every seed, from the mighty 25kg coco de mer to the fine dust of the foxglove, is a perfectly evolved vessel of genetics, which given the right conditions will germinate and (hopefully) flourish.
Whilst there is nothing wrong with buying your seeds, the vast majority of the seeds sold in the UK (around 80%) are overwhelmingly imported from overseas, where seeds have been grown in carefully controlled environments. This means your seed has no genetic memory of that soggy summer of 2024, your claggy clay soil, or the recent drought, whereas your plants at home will and for those that have continued to thrive despite everything, well that degree of hyper-local resilience and adaptability is something no seed company can replicate.
As politicians warn of future food shortages, it is crucial to recognise the role of seed in increasing our local food resilience; they are our insurance policy but the type of seed and provenance is key.
