A LOCAL group that uses music to support people living with memory and dementia difficulties and their carers, is inviting people to join in the fun.
Songs for the Memory meets every Tuesday from 1.30pm to 3pm, at the Masonic Hall on North Parade in central Frome.
The group says, “‘Bring me Sunshine…!’ This song made popular by Morecambe and Wise seems to be particularly appropriate in this rather grey and damp spring – certainly, members of the ‘Songs for the Memory’ group in Frome sing it, and many other familiar songs, with much gusto and feeling.
“Most of us will recognise the way in which a song from our childhood, or one with a personal significance sets us off singing, humming or tapping our feet. It’s amazing the way in which the words and rhythm come flooding back, lifting our spirits or triggering all sorts of memories and emotions.
“The ‘Songs for the Memory’ group was set up several years ago in response to research that showed that singing is particularly beneficial to people with memory and dementia difficulties. Following a break during months of Covid restrictions, it is now back to meeting weekly, and it is keen to welcome new members.
“The group is essentially a social gathering for people with memory loss and their carers. It has friendship and singing at its heart. Members are warmly welcomed by experienced volunteers with a cup of tea or coffee over a chat with other participants. Then the group enjoys a variety of singing activities based on familiar songs that appeal to all ages and tastes, from Vera Lynn and Frank Sinatra to the Beatles and songs from the shows. Everyone has a favourite! Feet soon start tapping and it’s wonderful to see people starting to respond in different ways. There are smiles and laughter – and over the years many friendships have formed.
“The group is led by an experienced music therapist – and usually she brings her guitar and clarinet, or a variety of percussion instruments for people to have a go on. For variety, we sometimes involve guests who bring their own ideas and musical styles. Most important is that it’s fun, and we know that it is a special time of the week for all those who come along.
“The sessions are free, though we are delighted if people wish to make any form of financial donation. As a small community group, we are dependent on the generosity of a variety of local donors.
“If you know someone who might enjoy and benefit from coming to a ‘Songs for the Memory’ session, we’d love to hear from you.

“So get those feet tapping or hands clapping and, as Eric and Ernie sang, “Bring me fun, bring me sunshine, bring me love!””
