SOS (Save Open Spaces) Frome have recently installed two kissing gates within Whatcombe Fields, giving walkers safety from the A362.
In March 2015, SOS Frome raised £346,000 to purchase Whatcombe Fields, saving it from development.
The two kissing gates gives access to the land from the A362 Vallis Road near the Frome town sign, helping to bypass the dangerous section of road that is without a footpath.
Walkers can now use the field path inside the hedge and re-emerge from the second gate located where the hedge ends and where the footpath next to the road begins.
Installation was completed by a team of two Whatcombe Fields committee members and members of Mendip Ramblers’ stiles and gates team.
Whatcombe Fields committee member Jimm Yarrow said, “We have been able to fulfil one of the practical suggestions for improvement of our fields mentioned by shareholders when share certificates were handed out after the fields purchase.
“The two kissing gates are sponsored by Mendip Ramblers and by our shareholder Laurence Elton, who is also a member of the Mendip Ramblers team, which completed the work with serious assistance from Ian. Many thanks to all involved.”
