Over 100 motorists were caught speeding in Frome in two hours during a visit from the police speed enforcement unit last month.
The results follow a decline in speeding at the end of last year, which saw a reduction in warning letters and prosecutions being issued.
“However, it seems many motorists have gone back to their old ways, when the police speed enforcement unit carried out two days of lightening visits in Frome in response to a complaint from Berkley School about excessive speeds,” explained Mendip Community Speedwatch coordinator Ashley Reay.
“A frightening speed of 68mph was recorded in the 30mph zone outside of Berkley School, along with one at 52mph outside of Frome College. Some 100 vehicles were reported for exceeding the posted speed limit in the Frome area in less than two hours during the second week of March. All of those recorded will face fines and or a court visit.
“Irrespective of some public views on speeding, you simply cannot—and should not—be allowed to drive at these speeds, especially outside schools. As the public knows only too well, there has been a high number of deaths in the Frome area over the past two years, with several attributed to excessive speed. These speeds are not just down to the ‘white van man’ but come from a variety of drivers—from family cars to trucks and across all age groups.
“What motorists in Frome, and those driving through the area at speed, have done is force the police to reinstate high-profile enforcement—a most disappointing start to 2025.”
