St Louis School Report – Autumn Term

It has been a busy and exciting autumn term for the children who attend St Louis Catholic Primary School in the heart of Frome.

The school says, “The phrase ‘To love, wonder and achieve together’ has never meant more. The children have been busy helping and caring for each other, and our young leaders, the Red Hats, have begun their year helping our new young children settle into school life happily.

“In September, a group of children took the initiative and raised money at a very well-attended Macmillan coffee morning. They wanted to help the local Food Bank and organised the collection of foods and, looking wider, they have just this week welcomed one of the Lampedusa crosses, made from the wood of a boat that carried refugees to Europe, and in doing so, learned of the plight of refugees around the world.

“The ‘wonder’ in learning means the children have taken nothing for granted. They have visited Cheddar Gorge and caves, experienced the magic of pantomime, been visited by a Roman soldier, joined in martial arts training, joined the Frome Anti Bullying march, welcomed the ambulance service, the fire service and the police to learn about their work, and joined with Magistrates to learn about how the legal system works. They have cycled, cooked and zumba’d through the term!

“Our older children have visited Bath University with a full tour of the campus and the Milner Centre for Evolution, ending up in deep discussion with HRH Prince Edward in the process.

“With these experiences, there is a richness to the children’s learning which leads to a lasting achievement that you just can’t get in any other way ….. and there is a lot more of that coming up next term!”

  • MP calls for Frome to benefit from NHS dental expansion

Local MP Anna Sabine has called on NHS Somerset to ensure that Frome and East Somerset residents benefit from the next phase of NHS dental expansion.

The call follows NHS Somerset’s announcement that more patients across the country have been able to access NHS dental care over the past year, with increased NHS activity delivered through new practices and targeted investment.

While welcoming the progress being made to improve access to NHS dental services, Anna has raised concerns that Frome and surrounding communities in East Somerset do not currently appear to be included among the areas benefiting from this additional capacity.

  • Community arts project to tackle town centre graffiti

A new community arts programme is being launched by Frome Town Council to tackle graffiti in the town centre.

At the full council meeting on 5th August, councillors unanimously supported a project that will see artwork installed on some of the surfaces often targeted for tagging and will extend Frome’s network of murals, including those at the Westway Shopping Centre and Vallis Road.

The programme has two elements. The first is a project to commission local artists to transform around eight utility boxes that are regularly targeted for tagging into colourful pieces of public art, with an anticipated cost of £8,000.

  • Council agrees to continue CCTV contract in town centre

A total of 10 CCTV cameras will continue operating in Frome town centre after town councillors agreed to renew a three-year agreement with Somerset Council to monitor and manage the system.

At the annual meeting of Frome Town Council, councillors approved a new service level agreement with Somerset Council from 1st April 2027 to 31st March 2030 at an initial annual cost of £27,980, plus any repair costs and future inflation increases.

The agreement follows the devolution of CCTV funding in 2024, when responsibility for paying for public CCTV cameras in Somerset towns was transferred from Somerset Council to town councils. Somerset Council remains responsible for monitoring and managing the cameras from its control room in Bridgwater.

  • Public meeting to decide fate of Saxonvale site next month

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

The fate of the Saxonvale regeneration site in Frome town centre will be decided at a public meeting of Somerset Council’s executive committee on Wednesday 23rd September.

Mayday Saxonvale has been seeking for several years to implement its vision for the brownfield site, which includes more than 260 homes, commercial space, a cultural centre and a lido.

Attempts to redevelop the site have been subject to numerous delays, with Somerset Council’s executive committee voting in late-October 2025 to put the land on the open market after Mayday Saxonvale struggled to come up with the necessary funds to acquire it.
