Frome Park Bowling Club had a good week in the 1st round of the National Double rink competition.
Firstly on Tuesday evening 10th May, the Men’s “A Team” travelled to Chew Stoke “A” and came home victorious by the narrowest margin of a 1 shot win 40 – 39, winning on one rink and losing on the other. This was an excellent result especially away from home against a very experienced home team but Park held their nerve to sneak the win.
The rink scores were: Kim Pitts, Pete Jennings, John Curtis & Steve West 21 -16. John Pritchard, Terry Drew, Trevor Elms & Mike Gulliford 19 – 23
The Men’s “B Team” in the same competition played home against Wells “A” on Sunday, they managed to secure a very comfortable win with both rinks being victorious and securing the game by 42 – 27.
The rink scores were: Pete Wheeler, Eddie Maidment, Alan Totterdell & Nigel Hunt 21 – 11. Norman Seviour, Richard Phillips, Colin Henning & Dave Whitehead 21 – 16.
The men also played a friendly away at the other side of the park on Friday afternoon against their local rivals Frome Selwood and came home with the early season bragging rights with a comfortable win, winning on 3 of the 4 rinks with an overall score of 87 shots to 56.
The Park’s winning rink scores were: Pete Wheeler, Brian Indoe, John Vince & Alan Totterdell 26 – 11. Norman Seviour, Roy Miller, Terry Drew & Steve West 21 – 7. Malcolm Jepson, Phil Gilson, Richard Phillips & Dave Whitehead 25 – 12.
On Saturday, the men played another friendly away at Purnells, an eventful afternoon with some thunder & lightning and a heavy downpour thrown in then finishing the game in glorious sunshine. Unfortunately the Park men could not quite claim another win and had to succumb to the home side who held out to secure the win by 9 shots.
The ladies have had a difficult start to the season and have lost their first couple of Wild League matches. Firstly last Saturday morning, 7th May the ladies travelled to Purnells and played very well to win on 2 rinks, losing on the other and by 2 shots overall by 40 – 42, claiming 4 of the 12 points. The best winning triple for the Park were: Myra Drew, Joan Curtis & Olivia Grant 21 – 11.
On Tuesday afternoon, 10th May, the ladies travelled to Street and came up against a very strong team who secured a home win by 5 shots, 56 – 51. It was a very close game and the park ladies can feel a little disappointed to have only got 2 points from such a tight match, thanks to the narrow win by the triple of: Pat Tanton, Olivia Grant & Val Church 17 – 16
The mixed team has had a good week with friendly wins at Gillingham and Mere. The match with Gillingham was a very good victory by 79 -57. Frome Park won on 3 rinks, the best of these were: Wayne Pitts, Val Smith, Val Church & John Curtis 21 – 13.
Away at Mere, this match was played as teams of 3 triples across the 4 rinks, the park’s team overcame a tricky green to secure a close win by 67 shots to 62. On this occasion there were 2 winning rinks for both teams with the park claiming the win with the better shot difference. Frome’s best winning rink was: Laurie Cox, Eddie Maidment & Olivia Grant 24 – 8.
