ONLY one week remains until curtain up on what’s set to be a fabulous show from Frome Musical Theatre Company.
‘Hairspray’ will run at the Memorial Theatre from Tuesday 12th to Saturday 16th May and is packed full of vibrant costumes, larger than life characters, and sensational musical numbers such as ‘Good Morning Baltimore’, ‘You’re Timeless to Me’ and the showstopper, ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’.
The show is set in June 1962 and change is in the air in Baltimore where Tracy Turnblad, a plump teenager with big hair and every bigger dreams has one passion – to dance on The Corny Collins Show.
When she wins a place on the show she becomes a star overnight much to the outrage of the stage manager Velma who is against her, her trend setting ways and her friendships with the ‘Negro Day’ dancers who up until now have to have a separate show. Tracy launches a campaign to make a positive change within society so they can all dance together on TV and won’t let anyone stand in her way!
As always, the company aims to produce a professional experience for audiences and the performers by hiring quality professional set, costumes, lighting design, a live orchestra and wigs.
Wig mistress Peggy Snook has been perfecting her back combing, bee hives and cornrows since January and has created over 50 wigs for the cast to wear the week of the show. With some performers having up to three wigs each Peggy was keen to make sure everyone has their own style and has meticulously researched the era to get the look right. She’s been dying, sewing and having a lot of fun with the hair, saying, “This is ‘the’ show for hair, if we can’t have fun with this one, when can we?!”
So grab your hairspray and book tickets to meet ‘The Nicest Kids In Town’ ‘cos they can’t wait to dance for you!
