In the annual Frome Festival Quiz, hosted by Pete Lippiatt at Frome Rugby Football Club, the competition was keener than ever, with 26 teams having signed up to take part.
Organisers say, “Dynamic question master Paul Hewitt kept the evening of fun and information running, as always, at a brisk pace. Team Three As and a C, last year’s newcomers who won so spectacularly then, defended their title in dramatic fashion this time, scoring 16 points ahead of runners-up Pooh Corner and 22 more than 3rd-placed Village People.
“As well as taking home the Martin Bax Shield, to retain for a year, presented by president and Festival founder, Martin Bax himself, the winners were given four individual shields to keep and four bottles of good wine from a local cellar. There were runners-up prizes, wooden spoons for the next-to-last teams and quiz books for the bottom team, so they can swot up and do better next year!
“As well as the main quiz, plus a match-the-date conundrum to ensure participants were busy throughout the evening, Paul introduced a hilarious game of Heads and Tails to keep the party spirit going.
“The grand raffle, with a large number of inviting prizes, many contributed by local businesses, included a tempting selection of fresh cheeses, donated by Dan Price of Somerset Deli, whose stall can be visited at Frome’s weekly Wednesday and Saturday markets, and a stunning climbing plant from Barter’s Nurseries. We noted that, for the third year running, the plant from Barter’s was won by a member of The Coven, whose magic spells still seem to be working well!
“At the end of the evening, Paul thanked his team of helpers; Suzanne Cooke and Festival chairman Bob Morris, who looked after the door and raffle, and Bernie Hewitt, Jane Collishaw and Marjorie Morris, responsible for the marking. In his turn, Martin Bax thanked Paul for his hard work for, as usual, presenting an entertaining and enjoyable evening.
“All that remains, now, is to wonder whether any other team will be able to defeat Three As and a C when they defend their title next year!”
