AS one of its activities this year, Frome & District Probus Club decided to again venture into the game of croquet. Accordingly, this August, some of the club members and their wives met at the Corsley Memorial Playing Field to try their hands at the ancient game.
Four courts were laid out, the members split into teams and off they bravely went into the sometimes mysterious game, playing three rounds in all.
John Hedges, press officer, commented, “We are grateful to our social secretary, John Hillier, for organising the event, assisted by Arnold Hodgson and Judith Hellier. They white-lined the courts in the morning and provided mallets, balls and hoops … and Union Jacks to decorate the pitch. Many of us had never played before and we can’t be sure we exactly followed the rules, but great fun was had and even an occasional flair of skill.
“The weather was sunny and warm and we finished with a celebratory glass of Pimm’s followed by a cream tea.”
Frome Probus was founded in 1984 and is a local social group for retired professional and business men. It meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Standerwick Centre in Frome Market.
The monthly members’ meetings consist of club business, coffee and tea, talks on a wide range of different topics, and a 2-course lunch. In addition, the club offers a number of other activities, to which spouses and friends are welcome, including theatre and cultural visits, walks, social events (New Year lunch, ladies’ lunch, skittles, quiz night, days-out, etc). The club has a culture of care and tries to help members and spouses when it is needed. The website is www.fromeprobus.co.uk
