FROME Sunday XI concluded a wet weekend at Fromefield with an excellent match against Hinton Charterhouse, despite ending up on the wrong side in a tight encounter.
An excellent team display was packed full of great performances from several players,with the Junior contingent in particular coming to the fore.
After being inserted by the visitors, Frome got off to a great start with Barrow and Steve Smith setting an excellent platform during a solid opening stand of 86. Barrow finally departed for 48, however Smith (51*) continued to play positively – reaching a well deserved half century before retiring.
With work still to do to set a good total, youngster Tom Richards batted superbly to press on and push Frome towards 150. Despite wickets falling at the other end, Richards continued to pick the gaps, rotate the strike and showed impressive timing with some sumptuous boundaries – remaining unbeaten on 36* as the innings eventually closed at 148-6 from 35 overs.
After a quick tea, the Showmen got off to the perfect start in Hinton’s response as Wagstaff dismissed Paige in the first over. Carruthers and Jacob rebuilt impressively however the introduction of Richards (2-21) into the attack swung the game Frome’s way, as 4 wickets fell for 30 runs to leave the visitors struggling at 69-5.
Hinton fought back strongly and appeared to have wrestled back the momentum until Wagstaff (2-31) returned to deceive Haines and put the game back in the balance at 97-6. However Maggs (36) and Griffith (24*) survived a few scares and counter-attacked to great effect in a positive 50-run partnership, dragging the visitors out of danger and towards safety.
Brook finally saw off Maggs just before the finish line, however with the hard work done Hinton completed a hard-fought victory next ball – getting home by 3 wickets with 3 overs remaining.
A disappointing result but an excellent team display from Frome, with several fine performances giving the Showmen great confidence for the rest of the summer. The Sunday season continues next weekend with a trip to Bear Flat.
