A FROME teenager has been crowned a national BMX champion after taking first place at the British BMX Championships last month.
15 year-old Finlay Mead won gold in the ‘15 Boys’ category in Derby last month, despite breaking his collarbone at a race in Italy earlier in the year.
The Frome College student has been riding BMX since he was seven years old, often with his dad, Damian, who is also a successful racer and finished fifth in his category on the same weekend.
Finlay is now ranked sixth in the country for boys his age.
Mum Charlotte Buckton told Frome Times, “It has been a very up and down year, but we are all extremely proud of Finlay. His grandad, Tony, is over the moon as he’s been waiting for one of his boys to be British champion since 1986!
“This has been many years coming; Finlay has represented the country twice already at world championships and last year was ranked British and national number four.”
Finlay, who rides for Andover BMX Club, is now planning to train to represent Great Britain at the World BMX Championships in the USA next year.
