A LOCAL man has returned home after walking 400 miles across a medieval pilgrimage route from Portugal to Spain, raising over £1,200 for charity.
Using one of the many pilgrimage Camino routes across Europe that led to the city of Santiago de Compostella in Spain, Terry Burton, who works at Hanover Gardens in Frome, began his journey in Lisbon, Portugal, at the beginning of September, arriving in Santiago six weeks later, before moving onwards to the coast at Finisterre.
Terry, who turned 60 before his departure said, “It was a great adventure, and I made many new friends from all over the world. I would like to thank the people of Frome for their support in helping me to raise over £1,200 for the charity Alzheimer’s Society.
“I made some great memories. With the help of others we have hopefully helped people who have lost theirs.”
This is the second long-distance walk Terry has completed, his first being a 500-mile trek along the Camino Frances four years ago.
The Camino routes are pilgrimage routes to the city of Santiago where the apostle St James is said to be buried. People walk for many reasons, including as a personal challenge, religious reasons, or to remember somebody.
