“Giving Frome a history it can be proud of.” That’s what Carolyn Griffiths and Annette Burkitt have been trying to do with their recently-published books about Frome and nearby villages.
Caroline has spent several years researching the woad and cloth production industry from the medieval period until the 19th century and Annette has researched the early and later Saxon period of this area from an archaeological point of view.
They will be presenting their books to Frome Library on Saturday 27th January, 10.30am-1.00pm, in the presence of the mayor, cllr Sheila Gore, following which they will give short talks on their subject matter.
Popular local author Julian Hight, who is a leading campaigner for the revival of interest in Selwood Forest, will also be taking part in the presentation and talks. Julian’s books, World Tree Story and Britain’s Tree Story have highlighted interest in the forests of Britain and particularly ancient trees.
Woad to This & The Cloth Trade of Frome is by Carolyn, published by Frome Society for Local Study, and Flesh and Bones of Frome Selwood and Wessex is by Annette, published by Hobnob Press. Dealing with the early and later history of this important town, these two books deliver the bookends of a history of Frome Selwood, as well as making historical information accessible to the general reader.
Presentations to the library will take place at 11am, followed by short talks by all three authors and personal book signings, attended by the Mayor and representatives of Frome Society for Local Study, with the event closing at 1pm.
