The McGann brothers to reunite after 40 years on the Merlin’s stage

Paul & Mark

Critically acclaimed actors Mark and Paul McGann are bringing a special performance to Frome’s Merlin Theatre next month, as part of a reunion 40 years in the making.

Mark, who lives in Frome and is an associate of the Merlin Theatre, will take to the stage with his brother Paul in a rare joint appearance in Mark’s new show, Mark McGann – In His Life.

Mark is an acclaimed writer, actor and director, known for leading roles in television and theatre including Lennon in the West End, The Grand, the BBC’s The Hanging Gale (with his three brothers Paul, Joe and Stephen), and Shackleton.

Paul McGann is best known for starring as the Doctor in the 1996 Doctor Who film; as Marwood in cult classic Withnail and I, and as Lieutenant William Bush in the ITV series Hornblower.

“I am genuinely excited to be performing with my brother for the first time in 40 years,” said Mark, who wrote the show. “It is very moving. There is not enough space here to do justice to the poignancy of our journey as brothers, but suffice it to say that we were raised to be very, very close and this, like for anyone exploring their own pathways out beyond the childhood home, led naturally to personal triumphs, challenges and experiences that had to be lived and processed before we could be reunited as we now are.

“The love is genuine and infinite and more of a gift each day.”

The performance features remembrances and reflections of the brothers growing up in 60s and 70s Liverpool, and Mark’s early experiences in his award-winning role as John Lennon. It celebrates their unique and inspirational relationship, with iconic and personal music, poetry and anecdotes.

“People can expect some great music, poignant moments and laughs, new insight into our lives and stories not heard publicly before, and a genuine celebration of what it is to be brothers,” explained Mark.

“We’ve done three sell-out performances at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool, where I started in August. The Frome version will be tweaked slightly to involve Paul even more, and I’m hoping it will provide a blueprint for a future show involving more McGanns.

“The Merlin Theatre has become my creative home in recent years,” added Mark. “Moving to Frome meant moving away from the active relationship with London theatre life and the industry, so it was important for me to find a place where I could continue with my life’s vocational work – namely, to introduce people to the actor/artist within themselves.

“I believe everyone can act, as we are all born with the capacity to copy behaviour we witness in order to survive. The theatre, therefore, is simply the greatest and safest forum we have for discovering both this and the extreme aspects of our humanity. It’s a church of the people, somewhere we go to be elevated to that place where we all meet as equals in universal recognition and celebration.

“When Claudia [Director of the Merlin Theatre] asked me to be an associate of the Merlin, I was touched and thrilled. It has a beautiful energy and a wonderful team of volunteers, all of whom go well beyond the extra mile to keep it functioning and accessible, so that others can be touched and inspired by the magic that happens there.”

Sharing advice with the younger generation of aspiring actors in Frome, Mark said, “Remember who you are doing it for. It’s a powerful and necessary public service. Know what you want your audiences to feel from you that will make them feel more validated in their reality as fellow humans.

“Perhaps come to my group classes or book a session with me to explore what your journey might look like.”

The show is due to run on Saturday 20th September, at 3pm and again at 7.30pm. All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Merlin Theatre Trust, which is dedicated to providing the community with access to high-quality performing arts experiences.

  • Parking charges introduced at popular walking spots

Residents visiting Heaven’s Gate and Shearwater at the Longleat Estate will now have to pay a fee to park following the introduction of car park charges.

Drivers will now be charged £1.50 per hour to park at the popular beauty spots.

This follows a decision made by Longleat earlier this year as part of wider investment plans for the areas.

Development Director at Longleat, David Leverett, said, “We ensured plenty of advance notice that charging was being introduced by highlighting the initiative five months ago as part of wider work taking place.”

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column – Butterflies and our climate

Greetings, this is Peter from the Wild Bunch.

Over the last few decades, as the effects of climate change have become more apparent, one of the most confusing aspects is that the impact is not all ‘in one direction’. Summers are not simply getting hotter year by year, nor are winters always warmer and wetter. When we hear of ‘the hottest June day ever’, someone will inevitably reply, ‘Ah yes, but who remembers June 1976?’, which of course did have an exceptionally long hot spell.

What matters are the long-term trends. They show that the predictions made thirty years ago are coming true - just sooner and more intensely than expected. But in day-to-day life, those trends can be surprisingly hard to spot.

If you’d like to get close to all this yourself, join the Wild Bunch on 16th July at 1.30pm by the notice boards in Rodden Meadow to survey butterflies with local expert John Samways. This is part of the Big Butterfly Count, taking place across Britain from that day until 9th August.
  • New art and wine festival to debut in Frome

A new art and wine event bringing together contemporary artists and UK-based growers, winemakers and wine merchants, is set to launch in Frome this weekend.

Unfiltered Frome will take place at the Silk Mill on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th July, offering a mix of exhibitions, tastings, workshops and music.

The event is the brainchild of Adam Collins from Frome’s Saddle Goose winery. It will feature more than 15 wine producers from across the UK, alongside guest growers and makers from further afield. Over 10 contemporary artists will also be exhibiting, with work available to view and purchase.

  • MP recovering after surgery affects voice

Frome MP Anna Sabine is recovering after thyroid surgery resulted in an injury to the nerve controlling her vocal cords, temporarily affecting her voice.

Anna underwent the operation at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, which resulted in an injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve – the nerve that controls the vocal cords.

She said the injury has left her voice very quiet for now and constituents who meet her over the coming weeks may notice the difference. A similar injury was suffered by BBC broadcaster Nick Robinson following surgery in 2015, before he later made a full recovery and returned to presenting the Today programme.

Anna said, “Anyone who knows me knows I’m rarely lost for words, so these last couple of weeks without much of a voice have been quite an adjustment. But I’m in good company; Nick Robinson went through exactly the same thing after his surgery and he’s back on the radio every morning sounding exactly like himself. That’s given me real confidence about what’s ahead.

  • Frome Festival – Frome comes alive with festival celebrations

A show-stopping celebration of arts and culture has run in 58 venues across Frome and the surrounding area for the town’s 25th Frome Festival.

More than 300 events were held over 10 days from 3rd to 12th July. Headline names included Sir Tony Robinson, Irish folk singer Cara Dillon and Sam Lakeman, comedian Phil Ellis, and actor Nigel Planer.

Events included a special anniversary performance of the musical King of Fools at the Merlin Theatre, a large-scale performance of Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert featuring a big band and local singers, and the return of the popular Food Feast. Around 160 events at this year’s festival were free or cost up to £5.

  • First round of consultation begins on new Somerset Local Plan

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset residents and businesses have their first opportunity to give their views on the new Local Plan which will shape future of their county.

Decisions on new housing, employment facilities and other planning matters in Somerset are currently taken on the basis of the existing Local Plans inherited from the former district councils, which were abolished and replaced with Somerset Council in April 2023.

The council recently concluded a ‘call for sites’ for the new Somerset-wide Local Plan, with landowners, developers and land promoters putting forward sites which could help to meet rising government housing targets up to 2045.

The council has now launched the first round of public consultation on the new Local Plan, kicking off a process which will not conclude until the spring of 2029.

  • Bridge club member retires after three decades

The secretary of Frome Bridge Club has retired after more than 35 years of service, during which he helped grow membership and teach new players.

John Perry stepped down as club secretary at the club’s annual general meeting in May.

He was presented with an honorary life membership in recognition of his service.

A member of the club, Sarah Miller, said, “Without John’s hard work and dedication, the club would not be in the excellent state it is in now. John was, and still is, a driving force behind the development of the club.

“At one point, the membership declined to just 12 members. As one long-serving member recalls, there were evenings where only eight players attended, just enough for a simple teams’ competition. No one wanted the club to close but the income would not sustain paying for room hire. John set about organising a recruitment campaign by promoting lessons which he took himself. This was the catalyst for a steady expansion of the membership.

  • Frome’s Partner Towns Column – Discover Murrhardt

Hello, I’m Cllr Philip Campagna – here with the fourth in a series of articles introducing Frome’s partner towns, formerly known as ‘twin towns’.

I’m delighted to announce that Frome’s musical scene will be represented in Murrhardt by The Frukes a couple of weeks, as they attend the annual partner towns meeting.

First, a little about our German partner town. Murrhardt is in the region of Baden-Württemberg in southeastern Germany, some 30 miles northeast of Stuttgart. It has around 15,000 inhabitants. Murrhardt is named after the river Murr and is on the site of a Roman settlement. Murrhardt is recognised as the heart of the Swabian Forest. It is a beautiful German town with a rich Roman and medieval history, set in stunning natural landscapes. It’s an ideal location for hiking, cycling, skiing and boasts a number of green parks with lakes and tranquil gardens.
