The sixties invasion tour

DOZY, Beaky, Mick and Tich, who  scored a Number One hit in the UK Singles Chart in 1968 with “The Legend of Xanadu,” will be coming to the Cheese and Grain on Wednesday 23rd January at 7.30pm.

The combined sales figures were in excess of one million copies. Their other top 10 UK hits included “Hideaway”, “Hold Tight!”, “Bend It!”, “Save Me!”, “Touch Me,  “Zabadak!” and “Last Night in Soho.”

“Bend It!” was a big hit in Europe, including a Number One in Germany.  The song was inspired by music from the film sound track of Zorba The Greek. The combined UK and European sales were over one million. “Bend It!” was later used in an episode of the American animated sitcom Futurama entitled “The Mutants Are Revolting”.

The band were also big sellers elsewhere in the world, particularly in British Commonwealth countries. In New Zealand, the group had three number one hits, and 7 other songs reached the top 10. In Australia, they reached the top 10 with “Hold Tight!”, “Bend It!”, “Zabadak!” and “The Legend of Xanadu”. In Canada, the band scored two top 10 hits with “Zabadak!”, which reached #1, and “The Legend of Xanadu”.

The tour is supported by the following bands:-

Marmalade, who had a month-long reign at number one with ‘Ob-la-di-Ob-la-da’  in 1969 then cracked the top ten with ‘Lovin’Things’  and paved the way for ‘Reflections of your Life’, another million seller – and a major US chartbuster.

The Tornados, who had a worldwide hit ‘Telstar.’ The Tornados offer the ultimate ‘rock’n’roll’ experience with a high polished performance and a repertoire to match! Paul McCartney gave the ‘thumbs up’ of approval after having personally jammed with the band himself. The band has a whole host of experience playing with some fantastic and, quite frankly, legendary artists,  and they will have you dancing, swinging, shaking and shouting all night long.

Tickets are £22.50, available at the box office or on line. Three hour show.

  • Sisters’ fundraising mission raises over £3,000 for cancer support

Two sisters from Frome and a team of friends have raised over £3,000 for a local cancer support charity by cycling from Frome to the Royal United Hospital (RUH), and completing equivalent laps of the Old Showfield. Esme Spicer, seven, and Olivia Spicer, 12, took on the challenge alongside friends and dads to raise funds for the charity that supported Esme when she was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma – a type of sarcoma cancer that affects the skeletal muscles – in August 2021, just before her fourth birthday. The money raised will go to the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group, a small charity run entirely by volunteers which supports the work of cancer services at the RUH in Bath.
“They do brilliant things for both children’s and adult cancer care in Bath and the surrounding areas,” said the girls’ mum, Anne Spicer. “This includes funding a paediatric oncology nurse who can visit children in the community so they can spend more time at home just being children.”
With the support of the charity, Esme’s treatment has included chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery at the RUH and Bristol Children’s Hospital.

  • New proposal outlines plan for Badgers Hill Stadium

A new proposal outlining the future of Badgers Hill Stadium has been submitted by a potential private operator, following the rejection of an earlier plan by Frome Town Council. The revised proposal by Badgers Hill Ltd (BHL), the group behind the plan, sets out a detailed vision for the stadium’s future, promising guaranteed access for local teams, strong community governance, and significant financial and social benefits for the town. It follows an extraordinary meeting of Frome Town Council on Wednesday 18th June, where councillors voted to leave the door open for a revised plan that offered clearer and more guaranteed community benefits.

  • Spotlight on local housing – Building Social Homes, a moral and social responsibility

A column by Frome Area Community Land Trust

To live in a safe, secure home is a basic human right; we all need a decent, affordable place to call home – it’s the foundation for our lives.

A recognised route out of poverty is living in a social rented home. Social homes are deliberately more affordable than private rented homes and provide a more secure, long-term way for people to put down roots and be part of their community.

That’s why we need to do our bit in Frome to support plans for building more social homes.

Right now, nine households from Frome are homeless and living in temporary accommodation.

  • Frome’s oldest charity launches tricentennial fundraiser for vital building repairs

Frome’s oldest charity, The Blue House, has launched a fundraiser to help pay for essential structural repairs to its 300-year-old iconic almshouse in the heart of Frome.

The Grade I-listed The Blue House on The Bridge was built between 1725 and 1728 and has been providing affordable accommodation for the town’s elderly men and women since 1482.

To mark its tricentennial anniversary, trustees have launched an appeal to raise £500,000 to cover structural repairs, including work on the windows, external stonework and roof.

A special evening drinks party was held at The Blue House last month to launch the fundraiser. The event was sponsored by Mogers Drewett LLP, Southwick Wines, an anonymous donor, and Guy and Lady Monson.

  • Lions visit air ambulance base following successful fundraiser

Frome Lions were recently invited to visit the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance base, following their successful Charity Sporting Dinner which raised £26,000 for the charity.

During their visit, the Lions saw the helicopter and the vital equipment the air ambulance carries. There was also an emergency call for help and the Lions saw at close range the helicopter taking off on its mission.

“Shortly afterwards, it was stood down and returned to base,” said Lion, Mike Geake. “Earlier during the visit, the pilot had said that the policy was always for the air ambulance to launch as soon as possible after getting a call and, if circumstances changed, they would abort the flight.”

  • Summer dates at pop-up community restaurant

Summer vibes are on the menu at Canteen, Frome’s pay-what-you-can community restaurant, as two more events are confirmed including one with an alfresco twist.

After four very well-attended Canteen events at Trinity Hall over the winter, where diners tucked into hearty stews, pies and puddings, Canteen’s chefs are designing a brand-new summer menu offering seasonal ultra-fresh salads and locally sourced meats and vegetables.

The next Canteen is confirmed for Friday 20th June and will take place as usual in Trinity Hall in Frome, and the following event on Friday 15th August, will be outdoors.

  • Leisure centre commits to making changes following meeting with MP

Frome Leisure Centre has said it is taking steps to address issues raised by residents about the cleanliness and reliability of the facilities.

Residents have been complaining about the centre for several months citing a lack of heating, issues with shower and gym equipment, poor hygiene, inadequate lighting on the sports pitches and the recent closure of the swimming pool due to a broken boiler.

Somerset Council leases the building, located on Princess Anne Road, to Fusion Leisure, a national lifestyle organisation.

Following growing frustration among the community, MP Anna Sabine recently organised a meeting between Somerset councillor for Frome Adam Boyden, Somerset Council and senior managers from Fusion who have committed to making changes.

  • Successful sustainability events continue this summer

Frome-based businesses and landlords who would like to explore the benefits of solar energy are invited to a free event at the town hall on Tuesday 17th June from 9am to 10.30am.

There will be opportunities to hear from solar installers and local businesses, explore funding options and discover how to turn your rooftop into a revenue-generating asset.

The event, organised by Frome Town Council, is part of the council’s Solar and Beyond project and follows on from two recent successful and well-attended events on a sustainability theme.

On 13th May, the first workshop for Frome’s Act to Adapt project, co-hosted with Somerset Wildlife Trust, saw around 120 people gather at the Cheese and Grain.
