Following the huge success of their debut sold out tour with 25,000 tickets sold, The Sons Of Pitches return in November and December for their second tour across the UK and will making a stop at the Cheese & Grain on 18th November.

Once again, the winners of Gareth Malone’s BBC 2 TV’s ‘The Naked Choir’ are set to sell out their new tour with several theatres already having as little as 30 tickets available.

The new tour will see the group perform songs featured on the hit BBC2 TV show along with never before seen material as the group continue to impress audiences and light the way with their impeccable harmonies and unique and hilarious a cappella improvisation.

The multi-award winning British vocal group combines soaring solos, luscious harmonies and sensational beatboxing to stunning effect as seen in their new and uniquely themed smash-hit video for ‘A History of British & Irish Boybands’.

“With over two and a half million YouTube hits and a growing international reputation, The Sons, as they are affectionately nicknamed, have given a cappella a kick up the backside.” – ThreeWeeks

Since 2013, The Sons Of Pitches have captivated audiences with highly creative vocal gymnastics and a programme of inventive pop covers, original numbers and entertaining improvised songs.

Other recent highlights include tours across the UK, USA and Asia with performances at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella final in New York, the Hong Kong International A Cappella Festival and a sell-out debut run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Alongside spectacular concert performances, The Sons of Pitches deliver hugely valuable vocal workshops. Current projects include the group collaborating with the Royal Opera House Learning and Participation department in a bold education initiative to inspire confidence in school pupils from primary to secondary level.

Tickets cost £22.50 in advance and can be brought online at www.cheeseandgrain.com.

  • MP calls for feedback on driving test delays

Residents are being encouraged to share their experiences of delays in booking and taking driving tests, following a new survey launched by MP Anna Sabine.

The MP says the system is ‘simply overwhelmed by demand’ and a shortage of instructors and reduced resources has led to significant backlogs.

“In rural areas such as Frome and East Somerset, driving is a lifeline. With minimal public transport, many people rely on cars to reach work, school, medical appointments, or even buy groceries,” said Anna.

  • Taxi tales from Frome inspires new play at the Merlin

A new stage play ‘RANK’ based on Frome actor’s experiences as a taxi driver in the town, will debut at the Merlin Theatre as part of its ‘Made in Frome’ 50th anniversary season

The play, based on a true story, is written and performed by Frome-based professional actor Dan Gaisford. It is a dark comedy thriller exploring themes of class, gentrification, assumption and taxi driving as the audience follows one driver’s epic encounter with a young woman and her two small children.

Battling to tell his tale against the backdrop of an ever-ringing phone, it is clear he has become more involved in the lives of his passengers than he ever intended.

Drawing on his own experiences working as a taxi driver in the town, Dan moved to Frome with his parents, brother, nan, uncle, auntie and cousin to reopen the historic Griffin pub in the 80s and, after a brief decade away, returned to the call of home.

  • Badminton club marks 10th anniversary

A badminton club in Frome has celebrated 10 years of hosting friendly and competitive games for local players.

Shuttles Badminton Club was founded in October 2015 and quickly grew to 30 members within six months, making full use of all four courts during Monday evening sessions.

The club aims to provide a social, welcoming environment dedicated to fun, fitness and friendly competition for players aged 18 and over. While not for absolute beginners, it people who have not played for some time and want to play again.

Club coordinator John Warman said, “The club has naturally had some changes in membership over the ten years, although some of the founding members still play regularly.”

Shuttles meets from 7.30pm to 9pm on Monday nights at Frome Leisure Centre on Princess Anne Road. Although there are currently no vacancies, those interested can contact John Warman on 07989 243897 to join the waiting list.

  • Travel company launches 2026 brochure with exciting range of trips

Frome’s own Lesmon Travel has unveiled its 2026 brochure, promising a wide variety of trips across the UK and Southern Ireland.

The family-run company, started over 40 years ago by Les and Mon Price, is now run by their daughter Brigitte, who is continuing her parents’ tradition of personal, friendly service.

Brigitte says the 2026 programme has been designed with relaxation in mind. “All but one of the tours are UK based, with as little travel time as possible from the hotel, so passengers can spend more time enjoying their holiday,” she explains.

Among the highlights are return visits to Bletchley Park, following last year’s sold-out tour, and a new five-night trip to the Isle of Man, added after several requests from customers. The brochure also includes a longer tour to Southern Ireland, which requires only photo ID rather than a passport, making it an accessible option for all.

  • Community hospital volunteers retire after 18 years

Two long-standing volunteers at Frome Community Hospital have retired after 18 years of service.

Diana and Rachael joined the old Frome Victoria Hospital in 2007 and have been doing the hot drinks round ever since. They both said one of the highlights of their role was serving tea to the Countess of Wessex in 2008, when the newly built Frome Community Hospital opened.

“That was probably our main highlight,” said Diana. “We have also loved the role, doing something for the community and seeing familiar faces at the hospital.”

  • Library welcomes back daily newspapers thanks to Friends group

The Friends of Frome Library have brought daily newspapers back to the library, after they were cut last year due to Somerset Council budget savings.

The papers have been secured in the library until early 2026, following a fundraiser held by the Friends, which raised £326.92. Some of the funds came from an avid library user, aged five, who sold ice lollies in her neighbour’s garden during the Hidden Gardens trail in the summer.

A member of the Friends, Kerry Meech, said, “With isolation and loneliness increasing, the newspapers provided an important, yet sadly overlooked and underestimated, focal point for social interactions, particularly for older visitors to the library, who would pop in every day to gather and discuss the news.”
