Frome audiences are in for a rare treat this autumn as Yorke Dance Project brings its dazzling new programme, Modern Milestones, to the Memorial Theatre on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th November.
Described by Dance Europe as “seriously in danger of becoming a national treasure”, Yorke Dance Project’s latest programme, features world premieres alongside works by legendary choreographers.
Modern Milestones is a mix of historic works and bold new creations. The programme includes:
Martha Graham’s Deep Song – a visceral solo created in 1937 in response to the Spanish Civil War, marking the centenary of her legendary company.
Robert Cohan’s Lacrymosa – a haunting duet exploring grief and reunion, performed with guest artist Jonathan Goddard to honour what would have been Cohan’s 100th birthday.
Bella Lewitzky’s Kinaesonata – an exhilarating, athletic work from 1970, performed in the UK for the very first time, 60 years after Lewitzky founded her influential Los Angeles company.
These classics are joined by two premieres:
• Christopher Bruce’s Troubadour – the first new work in over a decade from one of Britain’s most celebrated choreographers. Now in his 80th year, Bruce has created a romantic, lyrical piece set to live recordings of Leonard Cohen’s most treasured songs.
• Liam Francis’s CAST |X| – an innovative and emotionally charged new work from Yorke Dance Project’s first-ever associate choreographer, who also launches his new company Frandanco this year.
The performances in Frome form part of a wider tour that will see Modern Milestones premiere at the Stanley and Audrey Burton Theatre in Leeds, before a London season at the Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House, in January 2026.
The Observer has praised the programme as “breathtakingly beautiful.” With a cast of acclaimed dancers and guest stars Jonathan Goddard and Eileih Muir, Modern Milestones promises to be a landmark in contemporary dance – and Frome audiences will be among the first to experience it.
